Its been a very slow rainy and cold cold day down here and being bored I got my gun out to practice a few mounts in the mirror to check my form. I then got to thinking this gun seems really heavy, so I got the scales out and weighed it, I know I know but I was bored. It weighed in at 4.126kg and the scales are absolutely accurate! So why do Browning give the wieght as being 3.75 - 3 .85kg max?? I mean it is not just a few grams out 275g or over 1/2 pound. Is it normal for guns to be this far outside the manufacturer's specs?

The weights relate to 30" and 32" barreled guns also whether the gun has an adjustable stock or not, obviously adjustable stocks are heavier. There is also another thing that can cause this amount of discrepancy, they don't always fit the same type of barrels.

The barrels on my Ultra XS Prestige 32" sporter are standard Browning barrels and weigh in at 180 grams heavier than those on my Ultra XTR which has Vector Pro Barrels.

Strange but true!!

Gun has 30" barrels which are invector plus. It has an adjustable stock which to my knowledge is standard for all the ultra trap guns. It could be that Browning have been a bit lazy about their specs and just put the same figures on their website for all the trap models? Anyway 275g is a considerable difference from the quoted maximum weight giving a gun weight of 9lbs 1.5 oz .

Ah but it fits me like a glove DT and I would not want to spoil that! :)

The actual weight quoted is 3.7 - 3.85 kg. All XTR's have adjustable combs but they are not fitted to all Ultra Trap guns as some are fixed, same goes for chokes.

If you read the small print at the bottom of page 3 of the catalogue it does state that all weights and measurements are average values and this can obviously be affected by wood density among other things.

Not so much worried as surprised at the difference between the quoted spec and the actual measured weight of the gun. I suppose that in theory it should help reduce the felt recoil? I must say that I put about 100 shells through it last week in a couple of hours and I never tired at all wheras with my Beretta I usually feel totally battered after about 75 - 100 shells.

It's a good weight for a trap gun. As long as you get on with it that's really all that matters ,I must admit that I was quite surprised when I noticed the difference in barrel weights between my two guns.

My Sporter weighs 3.84 kilos which is just about what's quoted in the catalogue ,my XTR though weighs in at 3.97 kilos so if this had the same barrels as the sporter would make it 4.15 which would equate to about the same weight as your gun bearing in mind that I have 32" barrels.

Strangely enough the trap gun feels lighter.

Certainly the weight would absorb a lot of recoil.

Must be the weather, as I have just weighed my guns,

The XTR 32" fixed choke weighs in at 3.95kG, with the only difference being that I have replaced the buttpad with an Isis one which probably is of a similar weight to the standard one.

The sporter a 30" multichoke weighs in at 3.86kG, however this now has a trap forend and a small amount of lead weight in the stock to balance the gun, so this would be around the correct weight for the gun.

That's interesting Andy My gun is 30" m/c but unlike your one has the rubber comb, infact I think stock of my gun is quite a bit different to yours going by your photos. It was obviously made more recently but Scales calibrated and gun weighs in at 4.127kg exactly!

It is probably due to density of the wood. Highly figured stocks can often be heavier than plain ones. So if you have a nice bit of timber you have the answer!

Despite all the hmm good advice :) I have decided to leave it un altered and just accept it's a bit heavier than the norm :)

Les It does look a nice piece of timber with quite a lot of really dark whorles through it I like it a lot!
