Guys,

Have been shooting today at home with mates and was wondering if cartridges are recyclable ?

There must be thousands of cartridges shot in the uk per day at the popular shooting grounds.

Will somebody take them away for free or do you have to pay for them to be taken?

All the best,

Yep - saw those guys at CLA last year, they had a range of furniture (benches, tables etc) that was made from recycled cartridges - as I recall, they were offering free collection or something.

Wasn't sure of the business model, but it looked sound enough if they can get the cartridges together at the grounds.

There was a pretty big heap of spent shells at Hornet on Sunday as well..

Spent cartridges are expensive to dispose of properly. Until a few years ago everyone put them in a heap and set fire to them together with all the cardboard generated at a shooting ground, which is considerable. Burning is no longer an option for either item so they have to be disposed of via a recycling centre for the cardboard or to landfill via a 10 metre skip for the cartridges about once a month. At £250 a throw skips are expensive and the cost has to be covered by the entry fees everyone pays. There are recycling schemes for spent cases and we have a site locally who accepts them in bulk if we can deliver. Waste of any sort is expensive to dispose of and is often overlooked when budgets are being drawn up.

the grounds usually have a company to come and collect them for recycling …. if they haven't then they are a bit behind the times seeing as some are offering free collection

can always knock out the spent primer, but a cheap lighter in it and flog it on ebay as a 'shotgun shell lighter' :D :p
