Hi there! I've read on the BITCSF website that for OT cartidges must be 24g 7's.At my local ground I was told that a european 7 is a UK 7.5!Does that mean that cartridges labeled 7.5 and sold in the UK are ok to use?Looking at the cartridge supplier websites there isn't much choice of 24g 7's.Can anyone help please? I wouldn't want to get pulled up at my first selection shoot for using the wrong ones! Thanks! /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif

Ooops! I've just reread it and it says shot size no greater than 7! /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-surprised.gifSorry, blonde moment! /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-embarassed.gifThink I'll try 9's then!Only joking!/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-laugh.gif

Hi Kath, hope this helps you;OT, max pellet size is 2.6mm    Max 24.5gEnglish pellet size 6 is 2.59mmEuro    pellet size 7 is 2.59mm....................................................................................................................................................................English 7 is 2.31mmEuro    8 is 2.31mm

I've always been led to believe English 7 = 2.4mm , 7.5's = 2.3mm and 8's = 2.2mm. Continental and American sizes are essentially a half size larger hence an Italian 7.5 is an English 7. If it were me I'd go with English 8's for the 24 gram disciplines as they'll fill out the pattern almost as well as 28g worth of 7.5's.

Thanks Hawkeye. Not being too pedantic but I'll have to have a looksee later in the week as the table doesn't look quite right to me. The 7.5 English is missing which is a pretty odd omission, also US 7 is shown to be the same as our 6 shot which I can't believe to be accurate as they shoot a lot of trap with 7 (hence 6)!! Perhaps Henry can chime in /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif?

check out Sellierandbellot website , shotgun shells , another table there

Wow thank you everyone! I've always liked 8's for sporting but never tried them for trap. I'm just getting used to the idea of 24gs (28gs had only just appeared when I was last shooting) but tried some 21g Rio's yesterday. They were nice on the shoulder but didn't fill me with confidence. All the information you've given will be very helpful if I get the chance to shoot abroad too.Just need to try a few to see what feels right. /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif

English 8s are regarded as too lightweight for OT. Last time I tried them the trapper innocently said "I can hear the pellets pinging off you targets". Receding clays have a lot of deflection edges.

Why I hear you ask do we use 9s for skeet. It is to prevent single pellet kills – the clay has to be hit by the main pattern. It also prevents the russians from loading 7s over 8s over 9s and producing a 10ft shot string. Some have even been caught using plomb disco…..At proper ISSF events the judges remove cartridges from the barrels to check conformity.

I like the time the russians turned up in the 10mt air rifle with a 30 ft gun...

At Weston on Sunday, I'm definitely going to be using a 30ft gun with plomb discos. You just see if I don't!Csc3

Wait, what? Plomb Disco? Is that a nightclub?
I think i may have to get me platforms out of the loft /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif

They don't shoot from elevated platforms except in London. Plomb discos and cubic shot are used for woodcock at short range – fly everywhere. Rottweil had a skeet shell with a cardboard cruciform but that was a devil to shoot. I've got to stop smoking this stuff. The nearest you can get now is BIORs - short plastic wads which scrub the barrel walls.

I'm still none the wiser what's actually being discussed. /wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-embarassed.gif The nearest to what? Shot plastic wads scrub the barrel walls; so would felt wads, surely even more?

Ok..40UP is doubtless a lovely fella, but following his thread is like knitting fog; so lets get a whiff of clarity in to this.. It transpires that `Plomb Disco` is not some terrible misprint, or an auto-spell word correction, for perhaps, `Playful dumbo`. I did find it on a French website. `Plomb` is shot. It turns out that `Plomb Disco` is slightly crushed shot; which gives a rapidly spreading shot pattern. Apparantly cubic shot affords the same result! (well it would.. right?)  I want some for close Rabbits! CSC3
