Clay Shooting Road Trip

Hoping to get a week off work in June / July, and being in possession of a motorhome and shotguns was thinking that a tour of different grounds with a practice at each might be a good way to spend it. So I'm after recommendations of grounds to visit on the way.

Will be starting out from near Battle in East Sussex. So far we've be shooting sporting all the time, but not averse to having a go at DTL or any of the other trap disciplines or even Skeet (although I'd need to learn the rules first!).

Bit of an open ended question.. How many grounds are you after and where do you want to travel to?

Look on CPSA site to discover grounds (and bingle counties for others). When you have a route and potential short list, then I am sure most on here will be happy to give you opinions on the ones they are familiar with.

OK, route broadly fixed now.  The intention is to head west along the south coast (A27, A35, A38 plus others but that will be the main ones) through West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon and down to Cornwall.  Will probably stop somewhere in Purbeck and around Honiton enroute.  Will definitely stay one night in St Ives in Cornwall.  Route back will be along the north Cornwall and Devon coast, probably across to the Wells area in Somerset and then home via either the M4 or the A40 / M40.  Got friends in Cirencester so a diversion off in that direction may result in the A40 / M40 route being chosen.

You can't go wrong with Southdown.  Definitely try Purbeck Shooting School.  Ashcombe Adventure Centre on the edge of Dartmoor is also good - a woodland course with an 'honour' system where you just tell them how many clays you pulled.  Steve Beaty at Ivythorn Sporting in Somerset (one of the the gun trade's nicest men) also has a small but interesting layout which you can book and have to yourself, and Podimore is not far from there.

Brook Banks in Somerset is 10 minutes off the M5. Not a huge place but they have a good variety including overheads (I think that's what they called the clay fired from the high tower going straight over your head). Might be worth a stop for an hour.
