Having stripped a few guns down i am giving the action a clean has anybody used silicone spray on it, and your views on that has to the old traditional methods.

Silicone oil is neither a good lubricant or corrosion protection for metal/ steel parts. I would go with a gun oil from any well known brand.
Silicone oil is used for plastic parts or rubber. And it is also very hard to get rid of it where you don´t want to have it on
(clothes, wood, fingers...).
So take your Hoppe´s, Ballistol, Break free CLP, or what ever you got in your closet but no silicone oil.

I've tried a bunch of cleaners: Hoppe's, Ballistol, CLP, Frog Lube\. I finally settled on Slip 2000 cleaner. I also use Slip 2000 oil and grease.

Whichever solvent you prefer to clean off the residue, lube with any quality gun oil. I'm in the camp of thinking silicone lube has no place on a firearm of any kind. I also rarely ever brush the bores on my rifles or pistols, pretty much never on shotguns.
