Ha

Mrs ips is now set on a cocker. Our friends one we had at weekend was a joy to take out compared to the big stupid German shepherd we also look after but I must admit to having a soft spot for her as mad as she is on a lead, strangely the shep is very obedient off a lead more so than the cocker who seems to mentally put two fingers up when you tell her to come here. The shep will obey any command without question unless other dogs are seen then red mist comes over her. Lovely dog but too big as a pet imo.

How about a standard wire haired dachshund Ips - the best of both worlds. You can go on a ten mile hike with them or slob on the sofa together - they are happy to do both.

Cute. Mrs ips likes them but a bit small and girlie for me. No offence :)

Not really Ips, some of the males are quite big and you might be thinking of the smooth haired or miniatures. They were originally hunting dogs, nothing girly about them. They are a good family dog (standards) usually very good with children.

Oh my apologies sian I didn't know there was a difference I am new to the world of doggies. Will look into it as an option. Thanks

I like huskys my self, this is our second one. The first one lived to be 14, Lumi is 3 now.

Never thought this would be a topic in a shooting forum, but here goes!!!

Now that looks like a happy dog. What a beauty!

Beautiful cocker James I love that last pic looks like it's about to take off.

Pity it didn't have a pup going spare or I would be driving up to get it.

Having had much useful info from the forum and some very in depth and good info from Salop via email we are definately looking for a cocker or sprocker. I know salops thoughts but in order to add to the knowledge i now have has anyone had experience of the latter.

I always think with these combined breeds it's like putting your hand into a box containing an alligator and a £50 note! It could go one of two ways!!

You might get all the bad points of each breed wrapped up into one evil little package.

Or you might get all the good points of each breed in one perfect dog, but you never know what you are going to get!  :sarcastic:

I am lead to believe from a reliable source that mongrels such as sprocker are generally less prone to some health issues that can afflict pedigree breeds. Other than this fact are they likely to have a different temperament to a cocker or is it pot luck what you get or as James eluded to earlier is it the man that maketh the dog.

Also I quite fancy the idea of training it as a gun dog in order to keep it occupied although I have no intention of working it so any recommendations on book or dvds as I am totally clueless on all things doggie.

Gundogs ... Training and field trials by P.R. A Moxon

is a very good book don't worry about the field trials bit , the basic training and knowledge , information on selecting the right pup etc is all dealt with in the first part of this book and is very good but it has lots of great information through it all ..

Training a roughshooters dog by the same author is good

Training spaniels....... by Joe Irving

Gundog training.......... by Keith Erlandson

All are good books and I think are available on Amazon

Thanks shortlegs will go on amazon and order it.

Cheers
