Yup, just ask to shoot birds only to avoid the £5.00 comp charge, your scores still count towards your classification and will show on the CPSA site.
I still do "birds only" most of the time, bloody annoying if you win your class though!
 
Pretty sure you can't enter the comps until you've 2-3 registered shoots and get your official classification. You have to specify targets only
A non classified entrant can shoot competition, only its a bit of a tall order to win anything doing so, shoot the few qualifying stands well and your in AA A and thats big fish territory, have a few bad stands and the upcoming stars in B & C will fly by you. Do though mention “targets only” when booking in on desk and do know your membership number.

Oh there is a quirk where if you shoot sub 300 targets in a quarterly period you can still be classified at end of one for the start of another.

Do read up on the rules, sadly even so called seasoned members seem/behave without knowledge of same.
