Personally, I shoot better when I'm hungry. It makes me somewhat keener to connect with the target. Perhaps the "Hunter" instinct coming out?

I do know that if I eat prior to shooting, I'm sluggish and lethargic. I'm also of an age where health food is for *******, but the thought of a greasy, slimey burger or bacon roll would quite literally turn my stomach!

Eating is something I can do at home. Shooting is something I do when I go out.

I've really struggled with this - Type 2 Diabetic as well, and 'a bit of a lump' - have lost 4 stone recently, so am moving in the right direction.

I'm still experimenting on the best things to eat for different days of shooting - but for a mornings shootingI find, that Oatbran Porridge to start the day followed by some light protein (Ham/Chicken etc) and then nothing until I finish shooting is the best.   For a day of FITASC, I might need to take on fuel through the day, but low-carbs, low-sugar is best.... I have had my best results when I have taken a salad & chicken with me.

A mistimed/misguided chocolate bar between layout 3 and 4 at Grimsthorpe recently really screwed up my last parcours - I was yawning on Peg 1, and my concentration went AWOL.

I think this is a really important part of your shooting - find what suits you, and sticking to it.

One well known shooter has a theory that shooting hungry might awaken some deep seated genetics about hunting/gathering and make you a better shot as a result. Who knows!?

I have a low GI high protein breakfast but having all my calories at once doesn't work well for me so I'm snacking all the damn time. It was awful when I was pregnant. I took a picnic with me at the National IC!

Here it is non- parrot food diet.

Bran mix or toast (mixed grain bread) and honey. Coffee with 1/2 spoon fine sugar.

Arrive at shoot, more coffee 1/2 spoon sugar. Try so hard to avoid the bacon roll its the down fall of many.

Out shooting, water, 1/2 way round Mars bar or Yorky bar some thing like that for a sugar hit. Christmas selection sweets are best. (If I'm feeling flush Sometimes I take two or three bars to share with those I shoot with, if their not getting on my nerves  ).

egg and bacon in the morning or porridge on a cold day , then maybe an apple or banana , that's about it if its sporting. Fitasc i bring nutrabullit concoction "gruel" of mixed fruit and veg, tastes rank but keeps me on an even keel throughout the day. Anything else and by 2 o'clock I'm ready for bed! Happened on Sunday briefly at the sportasc after lunch and also at WLSS fitasc when the lunch looked too tempting and the last parcour was write off!

I feel honoured. You once gave me a kit-kat.

Full breakfast a few hours before shoot and nothing until after the shoot other than liquids. If I eat between lines I get very lethargic on the shot. I made the mistake of proving this a few weeks ago during a major comp were after a ham salad roll I popped a 19 into an otherwise jolly nice few lines of OT. Should have known better and never again.

I'd rather have nothing than a full breakfast but find that porridge or muesli can help as can a banana on the way to a distant shoot. The thing I have yet to crack is what to do when I arrive somewhere at mid day, should I eat and feel bloated or risk a head ache through hunger by 3 o'clock.

same dillema Hamid.

if I miss my usual meal time by too much I gene rally feel unwell. Maybe a banana or summat is called for even though I don't really like the orrible yellow mushy things.

Bring your food with you, done.

otherwise you are forced into fried or sugar rich foods, both a poor choices for different reasons.

I do keep an emergency muesli bar in my bag in case the catering fails. My worst experience was at the now defunct Caterham Clays. I once asked for my bacon crispy (to get rid of the fat) so the lady picked it off the griddle and dropped it in the deep fat fryer. "That makes it crispy" she informed me.

So, from then on, I used to opt for a lone fried egg in a roll for breakfast. Not too greasy if done on the griddle. One time, she was cooking my egg at about 9.30am and I watched her stick a few burgers on the griddle. People do eat them for breakfast at shoots! Anyway, I finished the shoot at 12pm and pitched up to order some lunch. I ordered a burger and it dawned on me as she served it that I was getting one from the 9.30am batch! It was like eating a battue in a bap.

I had a nice burger at Southdown a while back so it can be done but have to say the average catering set up fills me with dread  , the ingredients all look to have been bought down to a price for a start and they invariably use the same utensil to turn half cooked stuff over and then pick up and serve you with it.

We had a nutritionist come to one of your conferences, following a very serious RTA involving a colleague that was partly attributed to him working long hours, not eating properly and losing concentration. He actually ran into the back of an ambulance at 70mph, and it was only because the paramedics weren't injured and were able to treat him immediately that saved his life.

The company Director smugly shouted out that he has a very healthy breakfast of weetabix and banana with no sugar and skimmed milk. She totally shot him down, explaining that all he's eating is cardboard (weetabix) and fast acting sugar (banana) and that without the fat, you aren't able to properly able to absorbs the calcium from the milk....essentially, he was eating the wrong stuff...

she then went on to tell us that a lean bacon roll on wholewheat rolls are much better as a breakfast!

get the butties in, but hold the butter and sauce!

that made my day. I love a full English.

McMuffin breakfast and coffee about and hour and half before shooting most Sundays. Probably explains my poor form!

Cereal bars during the day with the odd cuppa and lots of water.

Now then, about that diet !!

DT

Four coffee's, half a dozen **** before I start, normally a skinfull of beer the night before!!!! Works a treat! :hyper:
