I am relatively new on here and to the clay shooting world.

I am currently doing all my shootingat an English Sporting club, have been looking on the internet and there is a DTL club not to far that meets once a month.

Is it a good idea to try different disciplines whilst still a novice or sticking to one until you feel you are competent enough to try another ?

Try everything Chris and then you can see what you like.

Personally I think it's best to try everything that you can as soon as you can. Trying out the different disciplines is the only way to find out what you really want to shoot. There are some people who shoot pretty much everything, however a great many people end up specialising in one discipline or even a sub discipline! :)

And then the good ones come to play trap. ;)

The trap side of the sport has the only 2 Olympics gold medals ever won in the same discipline for the UK.

Thanks for early responses...
I thought that the DTL may bring out some people's own comments as I have read a few already.

The DTL club only meets once a month & I went for a look a couple of months ago.
Had it in my head to start in January & give it a year just to see if I improve from missing many to maybe hitting some..

DTL is a great discipline, but it is often knocked by some as they wrongly think it's too easy. A lot of trap shooters started off on DTL and then moved onto such things as OT, ABT, UT etc. To try to start trap shooting on the faster disciplines is something of a baptism by fire, however there are some that started on ABT and even OT, but most of us in the UK started trap with DTL. Have fun! :)

Shoot everything you can. A, its fun and B, you will find pretty much all of the birds from trap/skeet on a sporting course at one time or another so even if the actual disciplines don't float your boat its good practice :)

Shoot everything and be an average all-rounder... and when you find your niche you can specialise.Just enjoy!!!

Happy shooting.

Mick. :D

Shoot some stuff for fun then when you have got it out your system shoot a "propper" competitive discipline ....... Trap.

Only joking :D

Like you Chris I'm new to the sport and intend to have a go at everything. Enjoying/frustrated by Skeet at the moment but have had a go at sporting and will be trying Trap for the first time on Saturday. :)

It's all good fun!

I am new to the sport, miss loads but love it. I have been shooting DTL, Skeet and Sporting. I enjoy the challenge of all of them, but if I need to give my confidence a boost I do a round of DTL, thats where I get my best scores.

chris try everything and then when you have come back to gods chosen discipline English Sporting !!!!

And then you can move up to FITASC Sporting and really be at the top.

FITASC?

For

Itinerant

Trappistas

And

Sociopathic

Classes

of course I have only been told such things I wouldnt know if its true ;)

Hi Chris,

Shoot any discipline you fancy (and registered competitions) - You will learn from them all :D
