Approach Rd - where the station is - if you know the road, you'll know the houses.

I clocked you being in Burnham when I joined.

This shooting malarky started off as a bit of a giggle between a group of dads in taplow, burnham and eton wick. Me and one other have been bitten by the bug but I know I am far more interested in developing than he is. It's a performance discipline and I can never, ever not be good at something and I know I will practice/compete/participate more than him so getting to know locals with a comparable level of passion is definitely a plus for me.
., small world. Just had a lunch meeting at the Dumb Bell so would have driven past your house on my way home to Cippenham ;) I used to live at Hillmead Court just round the corner from you.

Be good to meet up :)

Cheers,

Jon,

If you fancy a social meet-up at the Dumb Bell, Oak & Saw, Pineapple or Palmers Arms just ping me. I can then ask all sorts of stupid questions and eventually tag along when you go out and provide some amusement through newbie incompetence.

I used to work at Greenoaks Bath Road
I'm starting to think this Forum is primarily set up by people who live in SL6 for people who live or work in SL6 :)

Even let me in and I'm SL1 ;)

We will have to sort something out, is the Pineapple the one on the right on the way to Dorney?

We have all been newbies at some point :) Sure you will be able to come along before you have your SGC provided the ground has a section 11 exemption but the registered shoots would not be the place to start ;)

How much shooting have you done so far?

Cheers,

Jon.

Pineapple is the first pub you come to as you go to Dorney from Sainsburys. It's on the right after the speed restriction to 30 sets in. It's not a bad little pub. Do good sandwiches.

As far as shooting is concerned, I've done 2 shoots up at College Farm (2 lots of 50) and then last Sunday at Hicknaham (another 50 although I wanted to do another 50 but my friend who I drove there wanted to stop), so hardly any.

I intend to just do Hicknaham until they switch to duck shooting so that at least gives me 100 birds per month min. I'm probably looking to get in a minimum 100 every 2 weeks and start to build up sight and muscle memory.

I'm relatively au fait with developing these experiential competences and performance/sports psychology through other things (both sport and work related) which is one of the reasons that after only 150 birds, it has just ticked about (almost) every conceivable 'enjoyment'/'challenge' box I have.

I had a lesson with Mark Marshall when I first started. He asked me how much I shot. I replied `400 a month`. His face turned upside down in disgust as he said `thats not enough..`

Certainly once a fortnight will be a very slow learning curve, for somebody who is worried about progression (as you sound).

Strongly recommend that you dont `self-teach` at this stage either as you will just embedd bad habits. Get some lessons early on. Maybe one per month, then shoot at least once a week to practice what you have learned.

Edit / added:

Having said all that, enjoy it. I spent my first few years sodding about with mates from a pub before getting more into it. No rules, do what fits / suits.

Cheers,

CSC3

Certainly agree with getting some lessons... I don't think you need to overdo the amount you shoot, shoot as many as you feel comfortable with and can afford. Make a percentage of your expenditure for shooting less and learning more with some lessons with a decent coach (cue many opinions - I'll email you my recommendation).

Most of all - do whatever makes you enjoy the shooting - if that is strawbalers with your mates, then start there.

I've had to unwind poor practises/habits before on something else (part technique, part psych) so realise that a good start and some tuition on basics are worth their weight in gold. Your advice there is noted and positively reinforced from experience.

Time is my biggest enemy but I reckon I could get 100 per week in.

It really is only about basics now. Otherwise you can be working around some really principle errors and wasting what practice you have.

Enjoy.

hi guys do any of you shoot up at flightlines in maidenhead i help to run it with eric its every other sunday on this sunday. but i can make it but will be next time maybe we could meet up for a round

I used to - haven't been for a while... must get down and see how it is going.

hi sca its going well at flightline lots of new traps and a good food van. hoping to start a shoot up over touchen end eay in the next few months if all goes well

If somebody could put on a registered shoot in the maidenhead to Wokingham area, they would clean up. Nothing for miles around there (except straw balers).

going back to the post  set yourself a budget and stick to it .. costs can spiral out of control if you listen to everybody's opinions :.: :.: personally i would buy secondhand as a first gun (and i generally do anyway) you can grab some real bargains if you keep an eye out. regards to guns lanbers are great starting guns and you can buy a new one for £700 if you wish ….you'd get a S/H one for sub £500 for a newish one and cheaper for an older one…. is the latest technology going to make a difference when starting out ?? not in the slightest . I paid £275 for my first lanber and that was from a dealer .. great gun and still being used today . If you can afford a miroku then great … but …. no matter what make or model it is if it does not fit you right then your wasting your money . make sure any gun fits correctly or has the option of adjustment .

So, what does a 'gun fitting' mean? Is it entirely personal or are there some specific point about gun fit that I should be aware of?
