Yes felt like the gun started moving very quick once I saw the clay as i didnt think i had much time to shoot it. I shoot gun down on everything and that makes my hold point further out which usually gives me a small smooth gun movement but for some reason I shot stand one and two (teal) with the gun up and dropped 14 targets before I'd even started.
Only started shooting in October so still learning to read the targets and find a technique that works best.
What was your final score?

I shot it Sunday ..GUN WELL OUT , UNDER THE TARGET LINE , COME UP TO THE LINE, MOVING GUN, COVER TARGET BOOOOSH LITTLE LEAD ...
. Yes from his post sounded as if that was what was needed, gun hold must not of been out enough, hence chasing the clay,

Dunno mate.. Sometimes if the gun is held too far out (near kill point), the shooter will react when the target gets near the gun and push some unnecessary lead on, missing ahead.

Early days, I was shooting some skeet very badly at Bisley. Missing stuff in front. Jamie Brightman told me to hold further back, so that I could get the gun moving sooner, but slower, and place the shot more carefully.

It all depends on the shooters speed and style. This coaching on a forum lark is a minefield!

61 final score
Nothing wrong with 61 at FC
Sounds like if you get to grips with the first 3 stands in the woods that your score will be at least 10-15 clays more.. I always shoot the left hand stands from car park well, then once in the right hand stands 1-5 always kills me... I'm a sucker for keep trying though... Practice shoots there I do really well but once that 100 reg card in my hand the first 4 stands I just freeze up on...
Stupid but very true.....

your right esp if you think I would hold it that far out!!

Cheers. It's the same at every registered theres always one stand that puts me a few clays behind the pace and its usually on the easier stands that should be a breeze. I shot a 72 before Christmas that put me 2nd in class and i went for a practice after on the same shoot and managed a 85 so I know I can do it.

Ollie, I have shot with you and I think you are bloody good given when you started! It's getting tidier and learning the little 'rules' for certain targets that will take the losses away. I found that when I was progressing after my first year or so, it wasn't progress with the tough stuff that moved me up a class, it was definitely about hitting more of the average targets. Turning the disaster stands into 4 or 5 ex 10 rather than 0 or 1. Do that on two stands and you are 8 clays up.

Just keep plodding on, if you shot an 85.. And only started shooting in October there's not a lot to be said... There's an old saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink"....
As in teach yourself how to just slow down and give each stand the thought of every stand.. There's no such thing as an easy or give me stand or as I herd a lot just lately that should of been a card filler stand... The shoot grounds are very clever in presenting a lovely looking easy clay... You as the shooter has still got to break it... Don't pull your trigger and look straight up to watch it break keep your head down finish your shot even on the so called easy clays..... :)

What has helped me ref Sunday if you know when viewing a stand that makes you feel oh god not one of them again... Shoot twice at the same clay... A little late now but stand 1 Sunday the first woodcock should be a kill with 2nd barrel if missed.. And the Simo teal stand two the full face teal left hand clay easy shot on 2nd barrel if missed ... That would of been a 5 on both stands....

Early days, I would say shoot at both targets as this may teach you something when you hit the last one. No point locking yourself away from the problem birds when learning. Different if you are pushing for a class win or whatever..

Totally agree with you but until the fear of problem birds has past 5 is far better than 1.... And I'm only suggesting this method on may-be the one one two stands that is taken as a dislike to the shooter...

The only thing that puts me of with regards to using the 2nd barrel on the 1st bird was during a shoot back in December I shot at the first bird twice and hit it with the 2nd barrel and I got marked down as pair lost as the ref was looking up at the 2nd bird.

Tricky one that ... The ref should of called miss hit....
My suggestion was a mere kind of help to you, by know means would I wish you to shoot every stand in this manor, just if you miss a first pair on a stand and then a second pair sort one bird out at a time..... Just hope it helps

Yes totally agree, I think if I'm dropping targets and I know I'm not going to turn It around then it will definitely be worth doing, especially on the teal like you said earlier.

I think I was just unlucky when I had the pair lost.
