juley the word that comes to mind is gread nottingham and doverige are the two best two skeet grounds in the country thats why you get the turnouts

Thanks joe :) Location really helps too though.

I know rates and wages will affect how much a ground has to charge but we manage ok and have full time refs/scorers, most of them qualified too. I agree Snipey, I don't see why there is such a difference.

A round of 25 cost £5 (£6 to non members), that includes no birds and a scorer whatever the discipline.

I guess that's why some grounds are thriving and SC are allegedly looking at other possibilities of income.

It's not difficult though is it? Good targets, good service, value for money, a warm welcome and some pride in your work is all it takes.

I don't think it's that difficult, I really don't mind paying slightly more down here; providing good clear targets that give value for money! Unfortunately that's currently not SC!

Joe is right in one way about Wales, the shooters do have to score and button themselves.

As to entry fees, they are comparable with the English at £30 to £35 for comp.

In fact, there are very few qualified ref's anywhere in the country, so shooters have to do it themselves.

The standard of reffing does vary, which is bound to happen, considering that there will always be new to the sport shooters that have to take their turn like everyone else.

A lot of shooters are not happy with the situation, but that's what we have, and we deal with it the best we can.

As to Nottingham, I thought it was fantastic value, we even had a ref on a practise round on the neighbouring ground.

ken the welsh could do if they wanted to if the grounds that hold the shoots can pay for reffs for the D T L why cant the do the same for the skeet shooters  same price for both

We don't have paid/unpaid ref's in  N Ireland, self buttoning and marking is the norm, never been an issue here.

I have never understood why DTL shooters always get referee's and skeet shooters don't, when we pay the same price..

Maybe it's because were such a minority!

DTL is the bread and butter of many a ground..

Shot a few times in Ireland (north and south ) shooters all taking a turn (one ref, one scorer ) works well although a bit daunting at first ,

What you should remember is if you've always (or been brought up)shooting /refing like this to you this is the norm . but if you've shot for years (in comp) with a ref it is as i've already said a bit daunting , and i know quite a few shooters that would prefer to pay extra for a ref which is the norm to them , some say they cant concentrate on their shooting as the thought of refing worries them and would prefer to  concentrate on their shooting , .  I can quite understand this as i find refing (as many do) fairly worrying not wanting to make a mistake (more pressure than shooting ,an example a couple of months backed i reffed Allen Warren and Pete Stanton Hope plus three others when both of them tonned it , boy was i relieved when those final options were shot !!
