I had my first go at DTL today, well my first go at Trap really. Shot 16 first barrels and 3 second, so I think that makes it 54 ex 75? Anyway, it took a stand or two to get going, but I found I had to shoot the clay before/as it appeared above the barrels rather than past the barrels. Assuming the reason for this is that I am shooting a Sporter gun, to allow me to see what I am shooting can I just raise the comb by using one of those neoprene sleeves or is something more radical required?

P.S. I actually enjoyed it a lot and did'nt even hit the trap house :)

Becareful this DTL lark can get bloody addictive.

Before I brought my trap gun I raised the adjustable comb on my sporter by around 8mm or so to make the gun shoot a bit higher, the  reason for this is because you are shooting at a rising target unless you let it get to far out when you need to be underneath it.

Beware that if raising the comb using the neoprene sleeve ones that you will push the gun away from you eye alignment by around 3mm or so, due to the thichness of the material. You could just tape the foam pads that you get in these kits into place as a tempory measure first.

With DTL on each of the stations there will be a different foot position, hold point and look point, there are a number of you tube vidoes explaining these.

I've shot 0ne 25 straight 25-72 so far and lots of 23, 24 etc,

There are informative threads on this section.

You actually hit what is called a 19/54, in other words you killed 19 birds and got 54 points (19 birds killed,48 points for your first barrel kills and 6 for your second barrel kills), sorry to be pedantic but it's just the way trappies understand/say it!  Anyway, that's a very good start, keep up the good work, very soon you will be on 100/300!!!!

Thanks everyone - to be honest I was fairly chuffed to hit more than 10 targets in total, the biggest let down was that it was also the first go at DTL for my friend and he got 19/56 (Thanks Les! for sorting me out on the scoring).  I think I will bodge a raised comb and see what happens for my next attempt.

I say again a few threads on Dtl on this section.

Well I have been through the title of every thread at least and did not find too much about shooting trap with a sporter, or temporary comb raising kits.  Maybe it is the information is buried.

on each station keep gun pointed at trap house centre front, as it is a rising target you will pull up through target, as your barrel vision is just below clay pull trigger keep gun moving upwards, the only two difficult targets on dtl to my experience are a left hander on station one and a right hander on station five try shooting down the outer edge of these targets

I am really sorry but I beg to differ. You are much better to split the trap house into 5 places for your hold points

Imagine 5 small stones on the front of the trap house. One dead centre one on each end and one splitting the difference on each side (between the centre stone and the end stones). Number them 1-5 from the left side.

Then on stand 1 you hold on or near stone 1 (I hold just below and look above....others hold to the left of stone 1 and higher....every one has a slight difference to suit their style) on stand 2 hold near stone 2 etc etc.

If you are always in the dead centre position ...you can get caught out by sharp left on 1 or sharp right on 5.

No doubt Jane will be along soon to explain much better than I can (and she is defo an expert ....multiple England caps at this so listen to her).

More info here to help you work out your own way of finding the sweet spots...

Blimey, what happened to 'see it shoot it'? Just kidding, there is stacks of info for me to go through here, will take some time to work it out.

For 10 bonus points, seeing as most traps are right handed, should that not affect the hold point slightly?

Just see it shoot it.

But in order to do that.......you need the fooking hold points.......and a rough idea of 'that' laddie........is what I have given you above .....

Then there is where to look and how to look......... but before you get to that you need to 'shoot' and feel where your own sweet spots are.......you will know them when you hit them......just remember how you got them  then get them again.

(I know you meant to say 'thank you' )

iv'e seen all the books and dvd's all that info is their theory to assist selling, many were shooting 100 straights before the books, as I said the only two difficult birds are left hander on peg 1 and a right hander on peg two as you agree, dtl is the simplest of trap disciplines, when you boil ones brain with all the theory one cannot think straight

Depends on how well the Trap has been set in the house. But even on good layouts the right hander on 5 is trickier than the left on 1 and it stays under the roof for a fraction longer. But this is getting over technical! #see it shoot it. (turn brain off)

mag ...you did make me giggle with that reference to books and DVD's...younmust have got 'something' out of them or why did you keep buying them?

Look peeps........

Nothing wrong with helping out a newbie with a bit of theory. It is only a couple of pages of words.....should not tax anyone's brains that much....even us DTL and Helice shooters.

They have to start somewhere and having a little understanding of how the game is played might ease the way.

Anyone who wants to look and read ...will

Anyone who does not want to look or read wont.

Yes 1 and 5 can be a bit tricky especially if you are holding on the centre and depending on whether you are right or left handed.......but don't worry.....they are no where near as hard as an OT bird where they can have extreme angle right and lefts....and go like sh*te of a shovel.......!

Just understand the basics of each discipline you want to shoot and then go for it.

If you get stuck have a lesson from someone who knows the discipline......simples....

Glad you pointed that out and not me..... L. O. L. I hate that damn bird......if i am going to drop...it is on peg5 going right..... yet no problem with the nastiest of OT birds going right.

I bet I give it too much each time
