Obsession that I am trying to break :D a few weeks ago it just became a routine that quite honestly I wasnt enjoying, always shooting with one eye on my average.

Decided for me its a case of shoot as well as I can and if I go up a class so be it, stop trying to force it. Also if I wake up on a Sunday morning and dont fancy it I shant bother, rather than going just for the sake of it :)

Fully empathise with this.

I've been into clays for about 2 years now and taking it seriously for 1. Really look forward to Sundays and think about it all week but the more I do this the more obsessive I become, then when I get to Sunday I'm so coiled up with anticipation I shoot like a total tool.

I feel I need to step back a little at times and not force it just for the sake of shooting.

I'm on the obsession side of the balance, but have added a lot more perspective in the past twelve months and have put the wheels in motion to ensure that the next twelve months and beyond are as productive as possible, starting from tomorrow :)

Love it but keep things in perspective. The pleasure I get from family and friends is miles better.

Fuz, do you think being registered is putting more strain on your enjoyment?
the only thing putting strain on my enjoyment is me :( I have always been competitive as hell, not just against others but myself as well. Whilst this can be a good thing, always striving to better the last performance, it can also be a hinderance. The great thing with registered is the quality and variety of targets, the ability through the classification system and averages to track your performance against others of similar ability and also yourself. Bad thing (if you let it) is always knowing where you're at and what you "need" to do.

I have always been a sprinter and need to get my head around shooting as being a marathon. To that end I need to look in the longer term and accept there are going to be peaks and troughs and just minimize the troughs as much as I can and the peaks will take care of themselves :)

I've done what I've done this classification period, if its enough to go up, fine. If not I've got all winter to re-***** and set out some proper and probably more realistic targets for next year :)

Reason i ask is for the simple fact, I was told its good to join, but for me I'm not sure if it would take the edge of my enjoyment, and concentrate more on scores and averages , so for my first year I think it's concentrate on my shooting.

When I first started, an experienced bloke said to me 'don't beat yourself up over scores until you've been a it for five years'.

Main thing I learned after a year or two was not to worry when the bad days came along. They happen. They will go.

I like to shoot twice a week, but if it's raining I normally don't bother going. I shoot for enjoyment, not to get wet.

I'm a bit obsessive about it. I don't enjoy shooting badly, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the sport, otherwise I wouldn't keep doing it.

If you want to dick about at it, dick about at it, but I don't expect to have to listen to people telling me that I should be just doing it for a laaaaarf

I don't tell the people who are just dicking about that they should be striving to get to the top. Each to his own, we have different reasons for doing it.

If I just arsed about without any purpose other than "'avin a laaaarf" I would be bored senseless by it in a few months :p

That really is the beauty with shooting, give it as much or as little as you want. Shoot club shoots or straw balers if thats your thing, get competitive and shoot alongside world champions and olympians. It really is up to you :D

Obsession.........have been all my life about shooting, 500 pellet a week obsession with airguns from about 10, having a shotgun slowed that down......only becsuse I had to buy cartridges!!! then I bought a .243 when i was 19, an obsession with killing foxes and deer was born, burned the barrel out, the .243, a simple re-barrel to .260 turned into my tikka 595 inyo a semi custom, one of a kind, sub 1/2 m.o.a. target/loooong range vermin/stalking rifle, S&B PM11, range finders, wind meters, reloading gear, balistic programs, PDA's to run them on, comps, crows at silly long ranges (552m) 100+ foxes a year, 50+ deer a year, pheasent syndicate on one of the stalking permissions, 3 duck ponds, 500 pheasents, £300 a year, 14 guys, 12 total sh*te shots, me and the other half decent shot shooting 1/2 the bag....fcuking awsome!!! Then.......sh*t hits the fan, 3 people get jelous, stalking goes tits up, game shooting becomes unfriendly, "friends" do the dirty on me, clown wanted me to start giving him £40 per roe deer as well as paying stalking lease as someone told him i was stealing his deer? lost most of my stalking BOOM!!! lost all interest in shooting, didn't touch a gun in 6 months, cold turkey, so pissed of I still can't be bothered going stalking/foxing!?!? March this year, joined the SCTA, got the "bulletin" with all the shoot dates through the post, turned up at the first 100 bird selection shoot on the list, full of confidence (thought I was a good shot) hadn't a clue what I was doing, didn't know ANYONE, had great fun, 47/100....ouch! Pride dented, no way these wee clay discs are going to beat me, FITASC 2 weeks later, went pretty much the same, 57/100 ........BOOM!!! New obsession, clay pigeon shooting........

I'm limiting myself to 1x100 a week now, 1500 a month is mad teepee :D
It's GOOD mad!

Serious cold turkey, only shot a couple hundred last weekend, haven't been able to get out since, cuz that sodding nasty sh*te called "work" gets in the way!

But this weekend's looking good for some banging about in the countryside! Just need some eye candy loaders......any ideas anyone??

Yes and county and NSRA leagues for rifle and county leagues for pistol and LSR
I shot prone for Kent for a bit. Used to love 50m polar bear...got some sight raiser blocks and did 100m too.

Target 7.62 and F class at bisley...all good fun!

No reason not to register. Especially if you start skeet up. You can view your scores over time and note improvements etc and I find, that I shoot better in registered company (skeet wise) than I would shooting practice. Not in a pressure way, but just because.

You don't have to be "in the comp", you can just shoot registered targets...that way its a goal, but in your own time.

obsession for me since 1986 nothing i would rather be doing. i constantly strive to better myself. in recent years i have had to put a lot of time and effort in to adapt my style due to constant sciatica problems therefore even more obsessed now.
