Could have written that myself les that is exactly what i think. The rare occasions i shoot really well i have no idea what i did this i believe is when i am only thinking of the target and shoot whatever comes naturally. Trap nirvana i refer to it.

I used to get it a fair bit back when we had PROPER ball trap, but these days shooting OT it is a very rare occurrence indeed! I reckon I'm just getting old and past it mate!!

I would agree totally, when I have a have a really good day I can't remember what I did ! It all just works really well and seems to be in slow motion.
I find the biggest challenge in practise is maintaining totally consistency in everything i do. If I start missing I try to go back to my system.

I still shoot over the over top of the straight birds which is so frustratings

You absolutely sure your over them or do you just think you are ?

From my personal experience low trap targets i generally miss below because i didnt push through the target particularly if i shoot a gun that is high.

Nah mate not old at all, some great vet shooters out there. Practice is all we need and of course to not think too much then our old mojo might come back :)

Well I think I am as if I slow myself right down on the straight birds I tend to hit them with far more consistency.

Talking about the trigger being pulled. I detected one or two heavier than usual trigger pulls on Saturday and on one target I missed and the trigger did not set for the second barrel. Time to take it to the gunsmith and have it serviced? Or is there a quick clean up job that I can do myself might there be a bit of muck in the workings? Gun is almost new only shot about 3000 cartridges.

Maybe by slowing down as you put it your swing is longer and you catch the target therefore not missing below. Obviously this is theoretical as would have to see you shoot to know for sure.

Just a thought

unlikely to have an intermittent trigger issue so new, possible i suppose. If it does it again get it checked to be sure.

Yes mate there are some fantastic vets out there, but I'm not one of 'em !! My lay off is taking much longer to recover from than I thought it would.

There is a target that comes up on one of the UT schemes that we shoot it is a slow straightish  ~ 5 degrees but very low. If you try to shoot that one slowly it is likely you will shoot over it because it is already starting to fall away. I find it a difficult second barrel because its going down by then and my gun shoots high !

It needs to be attacked before it has a chance to drop, that way a high shooting gun will be moving onto a rising target John. Seeing such a target late can often mean that ones hold is too high and the gun is obscuring the target exit or pick up point!

That is what I try to do Les! The sooner I shoot it the better. That is definitely a snooze you lose target I just cannot shoot it when it goes down even though I try to get below it I always end up over the top of it. There are some targets you can be late onto but that flat slow one is not one of them only my opinion though.

Very curious about Beverley this weekend.
How was the BGP ? Were the targets really tough ? What was the most popular cartridge over the 2 days ?

I like to see the bird right out before I start to move the gun to it, I keep a high gun hold and think i have quite a high eye hold too. If I bring my eyes back too much I tend to move the gun too soon.

Are you holding on the traphouse lid or higher john? I know if I hold above the lid at OT the low straight can get out a long way before I can focus on it, seems common to OT and ut but may not apply to abt these days, but Ian will know!

At UT I normally hold about 20cm above the roof and at a gun hold not more than 1m either side of centre reducing to the centre, at peg three I hold just off centre to right. I always use gun hold points for UT but down here a lot shooters don't they hold on the edge of the roof and dead centre and follow the clay up and shoot it. I suppose it is a good way of generating gun speed for follow through though! OT for me anyway is just peg three at ABT, which is just to right of centre and 20cm above the edge of the roof lets me see the right hand clay. I am sure there are better ways but that's my method for now.

By the way Les had a shoot with the Carrega only five stands but it is a lovely gun. The condition of it is superb almost like new and the Carrega signature on the action in gold. There were only 200 of that particular model made according to the owner, 16mm half high rib, and no side ribs, like looking down a billiard table. The detail around the muzzles is really nice too. I felt it a little bit light after the XTR and also a tiny bit more recoil because of this I think.

targets were hard as you would expect these days but hit able as fairly good light both days. No idea on cartridges. A good comp with 120 ish entries.

Blimey John I envy you mate.....I would really love to try a carrega!! They are very rare guns indeed so it could well be worth a quid or two!
