All views welcomed, but more aimed at the instructors that frequent this forum .............................. just something I've often wondered.........

When I've had coaching, I've always gone to an instructor that's better than me (however you choose to define that - titles, classification, averages etc.) as I look to learn from them & raise myself to the next level. I've never quite subscribed to the view, that you don't have to be a top level competitor to be a top level coach. Surely for credibility, you have to have performed at, or around the given level you're coaching at? Is this view too simplistic, do you coach up to your standard or beyond? Would you be comfortable saying to someone "I can't do anything else for you, it's time to move on"?

Discuss..... :)

There is a big difference between an instructor and a coach...............No1

Some great shooters make great coaches and some don't..........No2

Some great coaches can't hit Jack **** and some can............No3

Some who instruct or coach are insured and most are not.......No4

A great coach knows when to pass a person on............and some do not...........No5

But as sure as eggs are eggs a crap instructor can only get away with being crap with beginners......once they start to learn ...they move on .......No6

In my humble opinion

To a large extent Nic has said most of it. There is a difference between an instructor (someone who just teaches you how to do something) and a coach. Coaches should cover more than just instructing, they should be able to teach you other aspects to shooting. Some of the instructors I have met are very good at getting people started and then passing the pupil on to someone with more experience once they have reached a certain level.

It's really going to depend on what you are looking to gain as to who you go and see or work with.

Lesson with Duncan Lawton this afternoon. Looking forward to it.

I can only speak for sporting but if you want to learn to get up near the top then you have to will need to speak to someone who has or still can do it.

As said above, just because you have been a successful shot does NOT mean you can coach, some people cant get it across, or shoot purely on instinct which cannot be taught. However, If you want to reach a standard of for instance reachin AA/AAA class, or getting into the National team etc then chances are you are not going to be able to pick the relevant info off someone who hasnt mastered the fundamentals, much less made it to the top 5-10%.

There are so many sapects of shooting to that standard that you will not be aware of until you have been there and done it yourself, and you wont learn them from a course or from reading books.

There are some very good instructors who can take people to a decent level but it all comes down to where you want to get to with your shooting.

I think Nicola summed it up really.

The rest of us can only stir the recipe.

What irritates the life out of me is the retired firefighter, or policeman who does a three day course and then announces to the world that he's a shooting instructor or even a coach. If only it was that easy.

We also have the very fine shot who just cannot pass on their skills no matter how they try.

At the end of the day we will all run the gauntlet but hopefully find value for money, and is that not what we all want really?

I've worked in coaching but not in shooting or indeed any sport and there's definitely a personality component too. An instructor can explain to almost anyone prepared to listen but a coach has to gel with the student.

No matter how good a coach is, there will be some situations where a student doesn't respond well and it's incumbent on the coach to recognise that and advise accordingly.

I agree with almost everything you said Nicola and entirely with Ed. I believe you need to have competed at, or near to the top to understand the issues and pressures and have any credibility when coaching someone on how to address them at that level.

I'm not saying I'm right, just my opinion.

People at all levels of sport need instructors or coaches. A top level coach would not necessarily be right for a novice & vice versa. I think that there are only a few that can truly teach well across the whole range of abilities.

I must confess to being somewhat cynical when someone purports to teach at all levels & they haven't been there, let alone seen it & definitely didn't get the t-shirt!!

Thanks for indulging me, I was just curious as to anyone else's thoughts on the matter!!

I am irked by the ones that clearly can't shoot well themselves, that then go and become an instructor instead.. Plenty about..

The old adage....

Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach. (Those who have no idea - run a website)

Thats a modern version

Equally those who dont, should not criticise those who do !!!

All depends on how you want to view it

My wife is a teacher and a bloody good one, I shall send her round to have a quiet chat with Clever, she thinks he needs resocialisation classes especially after his performance in front of spotty schoolkids under 5ft 5in at Churchills yesterday.

I must say I am rather shocked that you should resort to queque jumping and bullying young impressionable minds just because you were a little pressed for time

Your conduct no doubt was unbecoming of a business man of your stature and reputation within the community or on the other hand you just acted like a selfish Tw---T!!!

Just an opinion it though I would throw out there

By the way what time should my wife arrive for the corrective therapy session you are clealry in need of ???

im sure your current behaviour patterns ensure you have a substantial queue and a constant process of litigation ongoing against you !!
