VW have there tyre pressure monitors fitted into the rim as part of the valves too. I believe quite a few manufacturers use this method nowadays.

I believe VW use both in tyre pressure sensors (Direct Monitoring) and wheel speed sensors based around the ABS braking system (Indirect Monitoring) dependent on the model.

I think I have Indirect on my CC as I have to reset the system after a warning. The indirect system only shouts when 20% of tyre pressure is lost (significant change in rolling radius of wheel) and of course can be reset without putting any air in low tyre!! while the Direct type can identify much smaller losses. The latter is more expensive and the sensor life is only 10 years. If you have a spare set of winter tyres you need to buy an additional set of sensors at about £75 per sensor !!

I believe the Mercedes also utilise the Indirect System

Worst thing I had for over technology was Ford kuga. Had stupid voice command thing for heating and radio and stuff. Like it's too difficult to turn a heater knob or push a radio button. Also got proper anoyed with ecv blocked warning indicator. Heated seats were lovely though.

 
Does anyone know, if the Bentley Continental GT, are as rude as the Merc's?

It seems, that you can pick up a nice one with decent mileage for about 30k...and we'll...6L Bentley :)

Which would always be just behind a rental car.... any rental car. 

It's well known you can break speed and handling records in anything from Avis or Hertz. 

 
I have given up with cars. If it fits my tools and shooting stuff and dog and does at least 45 mpg and has cruise then I am happy. At 30k miles per anum it does not do to get attached to em.

This is part of the reason I have jettisoned the Mercs and swapped into a Porsche. Put simply I don't want the pointless "extras" fitted to most modern cars, I'm perfectly happy to turn my radio on and off myself. And of course with Porsche, the extras are so ridiculously expensive, it makes not picking them so much easier.

The car does have tyre pressure monitoring though, I'm not sure but I think TPMS has become standard on most cars these days. Might have something to do with the eco rating (??)

Of course, ironically, most mercs, BMWs, and audis you see on the motorways are probably lease/rental cars anyway!

I should know, I work for the biggest rental company in the UK! ;-)

 
Since I listed the car's unusual features above, ips made a pertinent observation about losing the familiar autobox, moving the functions to an electronic stalk which is hard to get used to. The last function change that puzzled was the physical light switch has no off position - the lowest setting is auto.

Damn, the car is autonomous ready.

 
My MLs had the gear selector in a stalk, but my c-class has a traditional selector on the centre console.. It took me three months at least to stop trying to select reverse with my right hand!
