Evening folks, bit of a question on behalf of my Dad, he would like to pick up an MK38 30'' for claying with this year.  He likes the trap beavertail forend and a gun that shoots high, but shoots all sporting.  He would really like a mk38 trap 30'' thats had teagues fitted in the fixed choke barrels, but these are like rocking horse droppings.  If he has to go with a mk38 sporter will it pattern slightly high the same as the trap gun or will in pattern flat.

Regards Martin

I'm watching Johnny English right now.

Why not get the gun he really wants...then get it Teagued for about £300?  Probably the best idea.

I am not hugely familiar with the MK's, though I know they are highly regarded.  However, if it is a true sporter, it should shoot 60/40, rather than the 90/10 (ish) of a true Trap gun.

My Mk38 trap shoots nowhere near 90/10 closer to 70/30, and maybe a smidge flatter :)

There you go, so they don't shoot massively high then.  So probably wouldn't shoot much higher than the MK38 sporter really eh Fuzrat?

I have to say I have an MK38 grade five fixed 3/4 and full , and even with the comb at rock bottom it shoots at least 90/10 , just my back up gun now next to DT 10 x trap with nill griffe stock that shoots 70/30

Best bet IMO is get a spoter and fit a beaver tail trap forend, as they are already multi choked (a teague conversion is nearer £400plus for four chokes and obviously £600 plus for six chokes) give yourself a few weeks and you will soon get used to where it shoots, having just converted to an mk38 32" sporter fitted with muller chokes 2-3  it must be the easiest gun to shoot i have ever owned.

He has a sporter forend on his silver pigeon game gun, so its not like he isn't used to a shnabel forend, but he does like a gun to shoot high, but he can always get the stock lifted to suit. Thanks for all the responses.

I'll stick my neck out and say all Mk38 are manufactured to the same high POI, and the adjustments on the comb only alter it a little. Remember the Mk was the classic gun to Sporterise back in the day. Learn to point the rib, learn high POI, it's the nuts!

The trap version has a higher comb so it will shoot higher relative to the bead. Most ribs have a gentle taper toward the muzzle which will raise the pattern slightly above 50:50 if the gun is mounted with only the bead visible and the rib flat.

Every shooter has to decide where they want their eye relative to the rib so that 100% of the pattern goes to where they want.

The only way to quantify the difference between these 2 is to POi test them on a plate or better still IMO, on real targets. It's a lot easier to tinker with the chokes on the right gun than the comb height on the wrong gun.

I shoot an MK38 trap which has been Teagued (I use it for ESP) and it shoots nowhere near 90/10, it's far flatter than that...more like 60/40 ish...though there has been a little wood taken off the comb to lower POI a little. It is also the non adjustable comb version and as one poster pointed out before, the adjustable comb guns do seem a little higher in the comb to start with (in the lowest setting).

Prior to this I shot an MK38 Sporter which had an adjustable comb which was raised a bit, probably similar height to my current trap gun and sight pictures are more or less the same with both guns.
