Hi all. As a new boy to the forum, but a Clay shooter for the past 32 years, I am going straight in at the deep end with the "Bee" in my bonnet.

Shooting English Sporting (ESP) is meant to "simulate the shooting of game as closely as possible" without harming any living creatures.

Yet at ESP events, I am seeing ever increasing numbers of shooters adopting the gun up stance prior to calling for the target. Surely this is not shooting?

To quote a paragraph from my shooting bible - "A recent article in a shooting magazine claimed that good gun mounting was half the

battle to good shooting. The author of that article was wrong: it is very nearly all the battle."

In this context then:

a. Is it fair to start with the gun already in the shoulder?

b. Should English Sporting copy the FITASC rule that the gun should be held below a line on the shooting vest

until the target is in sight? If not, why not?

This topic may well generate gasps of horror from some, but I firmly believe the art of good shooting starts with the moving and pointing at the target as

the gun is mounted into the shoulder.

EErrrrr, well I dunno, I've not shot sporting or skeet for god knows how long! It seems that English Sporting, English Skeet and I think NSSA Skeet can all be shot gun up and I think it's always been like that. I have no idea why though, or if it is detrimental to scores or whatever.

The topic was once done on another thread here.

IMO (and Carl Bloxhams) ESP has long since advanced past mimicking live game, so that argument is a bit passe.

Other than that, this discussion wil go round and round. I think the conclusion from last time was that ESP shoots are very prolific and there is not the sufficient numbers of good referees to police a gun down rule.

It is no longer practice for game- it is a sport in it's own right and therefore has it's own rules. You can always shoot gun down if gun up aggravates you :)

As a game shooter who has just come to clays, I shoot gun down.

There are however targets that "simulate" game I have never come across and in the last couple of weeks I have started to shoot these pre mounted.

It definitely makes life easier and the gun mount is consistent.

Each to their own, but if the rules allow it and it helps, then do it.

You'd have been better "going in at the deep end" by introducing yourself first.......

Gun down, game simulation = FITASC (not that ANY "game" ever show's you it's flight path before you shoot it!!!)

ESP (as played by the rest of the world) = (as Ed pointed out) a sport of smashing pairs of clay targets, some of which resemble the flight path of "game".......

Troll = someone who trys to cause upset on internet forums

Wannabe Troll's = someone who trys to cause upset on internet forums and fails..........

Dobbers = Rude Wannabe Trolls who know much less than they think they know.......

gun up, gun down, if its in the rules do whatever it takes to hit that extra clay. Believe it or not there a quite a few clayshooters that have no interest in shooting the live stuff and treat their Sunday registered like the monthly medal down the golf club.

BTW got any pics of you shooting clays at 2 yrs old ;)

Well spotted!

profile says he is 25 years old and has been shooting clays for 32 years.........quite an achievement!

anyway, agree with above, if rules allow it, do as you please and dont worry about what other people do!

Moved account to the nameless section. Something doesn't add up here.

Sometimes people dont want to share their real details like DOB on a forum, I can accept that, it doesnt always mean your up to something.

I dont think the OP deserved some of the replies he recieved, at least not after only one post. I would imagine shooting gun down requires more skill and could make for an interesting debate although Im happy to be educated otherwise.

If he doesn't want to share his DOB, then leave it blank. The irrefutable fact is that he's lied - either about his age, or the time he's been shooting. This is an open, honest and friendly forum. There are ways to start a debate......and ways not to.....

Darkside got it right..... ;)

what is the nameless section matt, can you still read threads and post?? i see there are quite a few people on here who still hide behind a blog name, shouldn,t be allowed to read or post on any threads imo, fair enough if you don,t want to give your DOB but should have your real name on your profile,Nicola mentioned this several times and i assummed it had been sorted!!

Totally agree with you on that Alan DOB really does'nt mean diddly squat in my book The question was nothing other then a query and a valid point and as for trolls or whatever they are supposed to be darkside you are not far off the mark!! Just of late i have found this forum becoming a bit clique to say the least :???: new members will leave quicker then a black gold if this is how they are recieved come on guys give them a bit of grace. ;)

there are reasons not to have full name on forums obviously i am one that choose not too. A few on here know me and a few i have given my details to via pm if you want to have your full details on thats up to you. As for our friend nicola, ask her now if she would have her full details on again if given the chance. ?

Guys - calm yourselves - it wasn't about DoB - we've NEVER asked for that, or solely about the name - there are other things in account creation that admins can see that you can't, and something did not add up.

We have a first/last name policy here - that was decided by the membership when we started the forum (and based on some of the behaviour on previous forums) - I ask for it in profiles, and I *try* and double check against peoples email addresses (some are obvious, some are not).

I'm not sure where the accusation of clique(y) comes from - but as member ship has grown, the policy of first/last names seems to have kept most of the bad behaviour off the site.

FWIW - I don't agree that this poster was a troll - although I do agree that it would have been great if the OP had introduced himself first - again, not compulsory - but it would be ideal and that's why I ask it in the introduction message.

Not to au fait with the etiquette as never really found it a problem but some people are not so! but never the less i feel it was a perfectly honest enquiry and as such needed nothing other then an informed answer, rather then the spanish inquisition

Now then, now then, calm down.

My real name is Dennis Webb otherwise known as Spiderman or Mr. Knowall.

What I want to know is why doesn't every thread mention Southdown , the finest shooting ground in my tiny mind. When I was coxwain of the Shropshire lifeboat service if any body deliberately lied about their age we would keel haul them and throw them to Moby Dick.

So all of you stop fibbing, play nicely and get along. Peace brothers.

As for shooting gun up or gun down, who really cares? if the rules allow a choice, just please your self.
