OK most of us know that the ABT of today is not the old Ball Trap that we all knew and loved! Who  actually changed the rules and why, and was there any consultation with shooters prior to the change? If not, why not? Does any governing body EVER ask shooters how they feel about changes before the changes are made? Why are they not made to justify the changes to those of us that actually PAY to shoot the deciplines?

Simple answer Les .............. no idea.

If I remember correctly first we had the 28g ruling sometime early 90s at a guess, then I think the angles were changed soon after, then we went to straight line as opposed to DTL curved line, think we had some speeds and angles changed again at some stage early 2000s and now we have the recent speed and angles change. Some or all of the above might be cack but that is how my mind remembers it.

One reason I heard was that pulling the angles in would assist grounds with limited shot fall so they could more easily install ABT .......................... don't know about the south but I haven't seen any new ABT spring up in the north as a result of this brilliant idea. I haven't really got a problem as such with the new OT speed or the springing teel as its the same for everyone and we will just have to get used to it in time, what I do have a problem with is that each layout seems to present totally different ABT targets. Now as we all know if you turn up for a DTL shoot and the targets are not near perfect then the ground better get ready for some irate DTL shooters because like us they expect some uniformity, ok we accept a degree of difference between ground and indeed layouts for all disciplines BUT they have to be something like or we may as well call it sport trap and shoot whatever we are given.

Les - For those of us who haven't been around that long can you give us a quick rundown of exactly how it has altered? What are the differences between ABT of 20 years ago and ABT today?

Cheers :)

Basically it's pretty much as Ian (ips) says above! Back in  the 80's/90's there were some fairly big angles to shoot, we also had some daisey cutters which could really give a newbie a hell of a shock, especially the straight one on peg 3, which could escape god knows how many yards whilst hidden under your barrels, so a good many experinced guys used a low hold and some held off left or right which worked for some but not for me. It seems however that the high birds are now MUCH higher, the daisey cutters seem higher, the angles are not as wide BUT, the speed seems to be more like that of OT. Ball trap was never an easy game, but it was shootable by even relatively inexperienced trap shooters, todays ABT seems more like OT, however the high bird is more like a springing teal with a rocket up its back side. OK the really extreme angles seem to be less extreme, but the speed and heights seem to have been subject to a huge increase, unless I, along with a great many others, have imagined it. As far as I'm aware, DTL has not changed in all the years that I've been shooting, it doesn't need to be changed either, I simply cannot understand why fast trap seems to be almost continually under change of some sort. Back in the 80's most trap shooters used 32grm loads, then it became 28grm, but a lot of us did not feel much reduction in recoil, if we felt any at all.

If as Ian (ips) heard, it is to encourage grounds to instal more ABT layouts, well it seems not to be working, I certainly have not heard of any new ABT layouts down this way and it would appear that the same goes for the North too.

Abt needs to be hittable to encourage dtl shooters to move up to fast trap by that i mean a dtl shooter used to hitting 90 plus targets will get demoralized pretty quick if he cant hit high 70s straight off. Abt will die a death if it wasnt for us die hard abt fanatics. I am determined to get my head around the new target presentation. Best i have done on the new scheme is a 48x50 and a 89x100 with many cack ones thrown in. It is still my favourite discipline and has been for 20 plus yrs and it aint gonna beat me no matter what they do to it :)

Les

yes i tried that hold to one side idea many years ago but i just missed to one side :)

Yeah so did I. I missed to the side opposite my hold!!!!! Gave that up pretty quick!

I shot the new rules for the first time about 3 weeks ago at one of the ranges here on the island ( not my local one ) and the guy that does most of the setting up is renowned for winding the spring up like nobodys business , Jake will back me on that Im sure, and I shot a PB of 94 but apart from the higher birds and the narrower angles I couldn't really tell a whole lot of difference.

They must suit you then so well done. You are the first that i have heard who isnt struggling with them. I might come over and watch your technique :)

Ha ha my technique is go at them like a mad womans sh*t and hope you connect with them, crude but on the right day effective.

Ha sounds not too dissimilar to my erratic technique :)

Where would I find the new regulations? I have an ABT layout at our ground which I want to set up properly and get going again at it myself shot it a number of years back and after a few years break (raising children) have the appetite and wanted to get back on the horse again. I have my eyes on 200 bird event here in Ireland in a couple of weeks and don't want to make a show of myself upon my return :)

This sounds very familiar. It is the technique I have adopted too, along with the 'slashing wildly with the second barrel.'

You can find the regs for ABT in Booklet 7 on the CPSA website in 'Publications'.
