The difference with Essevierre is that they're not solely dependant on bespoke stockmaking or alterations for their revenues. They also make production stocks to a high standard for gun makers such as CG which means diversity, economy of scale and buying power with the wholesalers.

Specialist suppliers such as Essevierre or Giovanelli exist and thrive because Italy has a gun making industry. If we had a gun industry in this country producing decent guns for the masses we'd also have a functioning out source industry including stockmakers.
Would have to agree that our guntrade appears to be fairly disfunctional! There appears to be a massive shortage of capacity to repair & alter guns and no one really doing anything to fill the void .It must be viable given the amount of work backlogged to run this sort of operation..

All very British !

Lack of people that actually can be bothered to do a job that may require more effort than getting off the sofa to sign on!

As I've said before, Jeremy, stunning blanks and fantastic craftsmanship. Enjoy!!

I'd love to have a hold of it as I really quite like the glove cut you've got there.

Part of the equation perhaps but their are people in other skilled engineering/craft based businesses.

Cyril as usual , you go off on a tangent .

Custom stocks are hand crafted to suit each individual , have a look at Jeremy's stocks the layout for the checkering would take 45 minutes .
The ladies at Perazzi do a fantastic job in their 45 minutes, of that there is little doubt. I was fortunate enough to have a custom Stock made by an English provider last year.  (Salopian knows who they are) Blank was chosen over the internet, headed up in Italy and then manufactured by hand in Shropshire. All I All it took about 8 weeks. Yes it cost a bit more than in Italy/France, but the quailty of the finished item with 32lpi  checkering undertaken by a Purdey trained craftsman does make my original Perazzi stock look a bit Rustic in comparison.

Mad Millie ,

Monday before Christmas I visited THE stockmaker .

His boss wasn't there as being a Southern Git he had to visit Mummy for his presents.

Roberto left to his own devices could have sat on his thumb all day , but instead he made a stock and forend for a Browning . By 11 a.m  he had roughed out the forend and was doing the final fit . An absolutely amazing craftsman, Italian of course , but I am educating him.

Happy New Year everyone .

You too Peter and thanks for the original recommendation, it has well exceeded my expectations.

Did the original poster go there with measurements already taken and an idea of the stock you wanted or did they recommend a stock fit based on discussion? Did you get to fire it at the end of the process prior to returning home?

Hi

I took my stock which wasn't far off but I requested a few specifics and I relied on their expertise on the rest.

I wanted more palm swell and grip profile

He did the rest

I have overlaid them to see the difference

I hope this helps.

The fit is great, scores are solid 54/60 practice 85 Westfield 89 Grange.

If I zero'd my air guns on the kitchen end panels wife would go mental.

Very interesting photographs from Jeremy which highlights the subtle changes required to achieve a comfortable custom fit .

With all the best will in the World a stockmaker can only cut wood into what he feels may be correct with input from their years of experience and feedback / desires from the customer .

Longtime readers of this forum may remember the photographs of Nicola's glove grip stock and the time and trouble that took , I know of many who have had custom stocks made but still ended up taking the rasp to them, a Beretta customer who had an expensive trip to Italy , custom stock , then had 6mm rasped off the comb , then ended up buying a standard 692 stock .

How many Glove stocks have had to be altered due to recoil issues injuring the base of the thumb?

A custom stock can be a considerable investment of time and money , just be careful how you spend that hard earned cash.

Never a truer word said i have a custom one in the cupboard messed around for ages trying to get it right, get on better with the adjustable one i bought for a 1/4 of the money to tide me over while i was having it done!  :frown:

When we get down to the nitty gritty , we must remember that we as humans are extremely adaptable .

Only a few of us bother with tailor made clothing and the majority who use off the peg, look extremely smart and function very well.

I suppose at the end of the day it is all down to promotion & publicity of a product , only a very small percentage have the belief , wherewithall and money to justify anything custom made .

But if you can afford anything and it makes you feel good buying it , go for it .
