New to shooting.... which gun?

Hi there!!

My boyfriend is an expereinced shooter, for more than 10 years, and uses a 12 gauage (is that right?) Lincoln gun. I'm finding it hard to use... a) because it's too big, getting some bruising, and B) because it's just too heavy, and my arm starts to wobble on the second shot! ;o)

He's hoping to buy me a new gun this weekend, and i'm not sure what's best for me to get.... finding it hard to tell him, with my inexperience and lack of knowledge what I think i need or want, to make shooting "easier" for me.

I recently used a Winchester Lite (again, not sure that's the correct terminology), which I borrowed from a female shooter, and it was fantastic, and my scores improved A LOT, but it was a £1500 gun!!!

Any ideas what we should be looking at, that's a cheaper? He says the budge tis about £700-800

Get one that roughly fits. I am guessing that he is taller than you? If so, his gun ought to be far too long for you; making it slightly heavier than it would be if it were yours and shorter. Also, being too long, it will feel even heavier than it is, because the weight is further out from you. A decent shop will always advise you on gun fit when browsing guns..

Welcome Em - hope you enjoy ShootClay. You'll get plenty of opinions here - my only advice is to go to a gun shop with plenty of choice so that you can handle as many guns as possible till you find one the roughly fits (as CleverSC3 says) and feels good from a weight perspective. Remember - lifting the gun will get easier over time as you build up the muscles that are required to hold an 8ib gun, so whilst it might feel heavy now - it will very quickly become easier. Now, I'll let the rest of the experienced members give you some advice. Any questions about the forum, please let me know.

Go and see a good coach/gun fitter before you spend any money! He will be able to advise you on what would be best for you. :wink:

Thanks All - A colleague of mine, who is also on this forum has agreed to give me some coaching to help me get started, from there, we'll go get an appropriate gun.

I have to say, I've only been 3-4 times so far (every fortnight, in Hook, Nr Basingstoke (Ashmore Lakes) if anyone knows it), but i absolutely LOVE it!! I'm aiming to get to Rio in 2016!!

I think I shot almost every week for about 18 months before I bought a gun, I used club guns to try out various disciplines. I don't know the shooting ground you mentioned, but you are not that far from the NCSC at Bisley, it's a great place to try out Skeet and Trap. :wink:

Hi Emma - we'll get down to Bisley one Saturday and have a play on one of the skeet ranges. Don't be in too much of a hurry to buy one, although I understand the temptation...

HaHa... Bob, it's my boyfriend who is keen to buy me one, as I am struggling so much with his and he has a second gun and an air riffle he is wanting rid of anyhow, so i shalln't complain
