My permission for Northern Ireland hasn't arrived back from Police NI.
Without sounding stupid that means I can t take my gun this weekend right?
It's not about the shooting for me this weekend I am supporting Lainy so it's no biggy.
I wondered how strict they were on paperwork as its the UK after all?
Thanks Jem.

Sent from my mobile that's my excuse for typos and errors.

Why don't you call your firearm officer and ask him to scan permission for you so you can keep it on your mobile for any eventuall control ?

If your flying , your gun and all paperwork will be checked at the airport . If your sailing then you might not get inspected . Call the NI police to find out what the sentence is for possessing a gun in Northern Ireland without permission :)

Each time i've spoken to the NI police firearm's dep't they have been very helpful

You're right, you can't take it. If your travelling by land there's a good chance you won't be checked but if you are, and you don't have the paperwork expect problems.

They are in Europe (and part of UK) so your EFP or SGC should be sufficient....?

Not flown to NI before though so not 100% about it.

You needed another certificate? Did NI become its own sovereignty and declare complete independence from the UK? So what is the point of the European Certificate and in this case the SGC. Absolutely ridiculous...

My thoughts exactly.
I can travel throughout Europe unchecked with my ESGC.
But bureaucracy wins over.
I now have a three day certificate with limitation on cartridges (500) to take my gun to another county of the UK.

I think they had some 'local issues' in the past which may cause them to be a bit more focused on the transport of firearms in the Provinces...

EFP entitles you travel with the stated firearm's in the EU but you also need to have whatever is needed in any individual country.

Northern Ireland - certificate of approval " to have in my possession a firearm and ammunition in northern Ireland ". cost = FOC

Ireland - if your shooting in Ireland you need - Non resident firearm certificate . Cost = 40 euro . + an EFP

Ireland- if your travelling through Ireland - Transit the state license - cost = FOC . + an EFP

Many years ago I went by Ferry, the rest of the lads flew. I was loaded up to the roof with shells and guns. The Irish border guard chappie asked if I had " anything to declare," Aye umpteen thousand shotgun shells and a couple of shotguns says I. He asked the same question again, and I gave him the same answer, he asked me again for the bloody third time, and I responded with the same answer. He then changed direction with his question, " You are only allowed 500 shotgun shells and one gun on your permit, now Sir, how many shotgun shells and guns do you have. " Then the penny dropped - 500 cartridges and one gun officer I said - " in that case off you go and enjoy your holiday. "

I doubt if it would happen these days.

ps, this was entry into Southern Ireland.

The reason is Northen Ireland does not have SGC's, because of the troubles,  it is section 1 for EVERYTHING!!! You have to apply for tempoary N.I. firearms certificate to bring a shotgun and cartridges into N.I. You are allowed to take authorised 'firearms' that you specifically applyed for and maximum quantitys of ammunition apply.

I understand the history but thought things would have changed by now, seems rather draconian when the 'troubles' officially ended years ago.

Matt, the troubles have never ended!!! They have clamed down, there is less bombings, less murders, less punishment beatings...but they have NOT ended!!! There is still a minority who would like to go back the way it was, a minority on both sides...

...no offence, not having a go at you, but few Englishmen do truely "understand the history"
