I know this should technically be in sports vision but it is a specific trap related question.

Has anyone found A lens that works perfectly well in all light conditions as i am sick of picking the correct lens only for the light to change half way through a line then its very wrong.

Sorry I'm not trap experienced, but shot plenty of orange aways.. I used to use a max orange 40, which was good on orange for contrast and I found that it was usable in anything except very dark days or into direct sun (which trap layouts don't have). I had three lenses and used that one 85% of the time. 95% if you exclude the into the sun stuff.

Cheers will

i have a 40 hi def but not the max orange i find it a little dark unless there is some light so may have a look at the max orange. The only trap ground i can think of that is still open and has sun in front is sc. 40up and i shot one morning last week and one afternoon prior to comp purely to find correct lens. Then arrived at ground sat to find fog, we hadn't trained for fog :(

I got a pair of Rangers with a custom tinted lens from Mr Lyons. Mine has a high colour saturation and is therefore quite dark, but then i like it like that. The process that Ed goes through is brilliant especially for trap shooters as you will always be looking at an orange clay out in the open. Mine ended up as a mix of purple and red but you could choose anything you like. I think there were 10,000 colour variations and saturations from memory but you will see what colours work well for you.

Ooh so he has a fiddle about and picks the exact tint for you presumably ?

And does your tint work in all light conditions ?

Sounds expensive ?

You go through all of the colours to find what works for you and fine tune it till its right.

As i said, my tint is very dark and the only time i have felt it could have been lighter was under covered trap layout with dark rainy sky. My tint works for my eyes and allows me to pick out orange very easily whilst keeping my eyes relaxed.

I should also point out that mine are prescription ground lenses, not clip-ons or "double glazing" so truly custom.

I used to have Pilla but i could never get the lens tint right, the sun only needs to go behind a cloud and the clay is lost.

Re your last point, exactly my problem UK light is so variable minute by minute no pilla seems to work for the duration of a line, very frustrating.

I use a Decot light target orange in all conditions now.  Darker lenses dilate the pupil and reduce depth of field.  You have much better depth perception with smaller pupils.  OK, I lied, I do have another set of lenses - a yellow so pale that it is almost clear that I have used a couple times when it was really murky.  In the old days I had a set of very pale purple to use against a screaming green background in Hawaii and they were sorta OK in a general sense.  But I simplified to the light orange and have not felt any need to reconsider that even after the cataract surg.

JMO of course

shooting in Hawaii, i like the sound of that. Is there much shooting there ?

Ips looks like you need to visit ed Lyons and get yourself sorted once and for all. Good luck with it all.

I am currently in pm discussion with ed so hope to come to some conclusion. Will report back.

I use light Orange on days when it is what I would term good light then Vermillion for slightly better light in winter. In near perfect light in summertime I use my purple ones because we shoot against a green forested background, that really picks up the orange clay. In absolutely perfect bright light conditions I used the CMT lenses they actually intensify orange targets but are quite a dark lens so I feel you need really the best conditions to make the most of them.

The glasses are Randolph ranger the lenses provided by Ed Lyons

years ago we went there for the State Shoot.  Just super nice people, had a great time.  I would not be surprised if there were a club on each island.  ATA stuff.  And what with the possibilities I'd have to think that sporting would abound.  I'd bet a quick search would reveal all.

I may have to think about doing that again next year hahaha

I use high scorer vermillion in all light these days. I tried various other colours, but due to light variations, at times from one peg to another, I had to settle on one for everything, a compromise I guess. Vermillion seems to work best for me on orange targets, because its all I shoot of course. That colour is also good against most backgrounds too, it really seems to pick out the orange very well. I just hope I never have to shoot against an orange background! Pmsl!!

A friend of mine has a 46N for me to try next week so i will see what happens with that.

A light orange lens normally suits most grounds, targets and weather conditions. On a really sunny day with green backgrounds i'll use a dark purple.

Rangers CMT lens is also good for layouts where targets are tricky to pick up from the trap but there's probably only one or two grounds in the country where i'd use it.

Obviously, you asked the wrong question.

You should have asked, "where can I move to that will have weather nice enough that I only need one lens color?"
