A quick wander around after work to put some rabbits in the freezer saw me encounter two lads poaching (carrying air rifle and dead pheasant) over the estate which we are taking the shooting rights to from Feb (we have permission to control vermin).

One of the kids (15) I know from the village, the older looking guy I don’t know at all.  I sent them on their way with a stern word about theft and the dangers of being on ground in the dark where people don’t know they are there, not withstanding how the local police would view armed trespass and I think they got the message.

Not sure whether to inform landowner ( who will call police) or the lads parents who I vauguely know, or just leave it.

personally if you consider that they heeded the warning I would leave it at that.

In respect of the 15 y old, if it was my son, I'd want to know.  His older mate may be the ringleader and the next time they try it they may come across someone who doesn't hesistate to call the police.

Depends if you think the parents will give a toss really.

I would speak to the parents..... Explain the situation and also long term it could save the young lad getting himself into further trouble.

But maybe offer the opportunity of some beating seeing as he has shown an interest in shooting and pheasants etc. Maybe if it worked out he could gain permission in the future to shoot squirrels etc round feeders out of the season with an air rifle. His parents can dish out any punishment if they wish but this way you have shown poaching wont be tolerated and also given the chance for him to learn and get on a good path of learning and experience.

Poaching in this day and age? Birds are worth nothing for goodness sake.
Can you tell some of the driven shoots out west? 50 + Vat at some of them..

Good point, his Dad is very serious and strict and I didn’t really want to raise the issue, the lads a pretty good kid and my initial thought was ‘boys will be boys’..

They we’re both pretty surprised so I doubt there will be a repeat..

Have a course of action planned for 'Next Time', I think there may well be one  !
They are under no illusions, land owner and police will be informed.  The local FAO is a pretty formidable fella so I would probably give him a buzz to have a chat.

They might be fifty-odd quid before you shoot them but a fraction of that afterwards.

NAH.........................We will just ship em out to that new Country er................AMERICA   !        :p
No Australia  is not full yet !

Three discovered last night, not the guy from the village but his buddy and two others.  I was given fake names I’m sure but managed to get car reg so police and land owner informed, I will ask the local lad who they are..

What concerns me more than the piss taking of theft is the fact that they have damaged a couple pens and could have had a bad accident and no one would know..
