Need to get prescription shooting glasses, been looking at Wiley X, Rapideye and Topgun ones. Is it worth paying the extra or to go for the Topgun ones and are they very clear or slightly distorted, the more you read the more confused you become on the subject, any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

HI.

First, Ed Lyons at Flint & Partners is totally your man, for this question...anything vision related.

Second.  Any Polycarbonate or similar lens will not be as "clear" as Pilla Lenses, due to the way that they are made, but that is not too say that Polycarbonate lenses are crap.

TopGun glasses come highly recommended and come with a variety of lens tints.  Not familiar with Rapid Eye. Wiley X look very nice

What sort of budget do you / could you have?  Have you considered daily disposable contact lenses?

I would advise against prescription shooting glasses with a prescription insert . As the insert can only take small lenses some distortion seems inevitable. Go for single lens prescription shooting glasses . As you need visual protection anyway when shooting clays these seem the most cost effective way of getting good vision. As with anything else you get what you pay for!

And there's always laser-eye surgery: I had it done just over two weeks ago and left the treatment room with 20:20 vision.

Happy to discuss it if you want to consider it.

Online optitions Specs-by-post single vision lenses choice of frames and tints from £18-£36 per pair plus p+p they give excellent service.

There are loads of options to choose from optical insert type or standard vision glasses, all down to your personal choice and budget.

I've just bought some Ziess prescription glasses from Stewards of Bristol. They are excellent value.

thanks for the replies perhaps I should explain myself better

I wear single vision glasses and sometimes daily contact lenses

I want the shooting glasses for safety and lens filter

i want to spend about £120

I thought of prescription rx inserts as killing two birds with one stone, but would I be better wearing contacts and shooting glasses for better vision

is this for specific problems or general issues with eyesight, I am Long Sighted but need glasses to read and for anything near, I am due to upgrade my prescription and will need at least 2 new pairs of glasses, I cant get along with contacts. Is Laser a sound option and how much did i cost

Like you, I can't get along with contact lenses - stopped wearing them in 1991.

For me, having the procedure (laser eye surgery) was a pragmatic solution to not having to wear glasses for distance, driving and shooting, and the constant swapping between prescription sun glasses, normal glasses, shooting glasses etc. Utter PITA. OK, if I have to go back to wearing reading glasses at some stage when I'm older (which I currently don't have to do), then I'm fine with that.

Whilst laser eye surgery is available/suitable for some long-sighted people, it falls within a narrower prescription range than those with short-sight, which is what I was.

I'll send you some details of my procedure, costs etc. - I was amazed at how quick it was to undergo, and the results are instantaneous. Best decision I ever made.

An Olympic silver medallist told me he wore contacts plus shooting glasses so that the focal point was always in the correct place

Not really sure if a US supplier is an option for you.  I have used Decot frames/lenses for 20+ yrs now and I've never had anything to complain about.  Absolutely great customer service.  Wonderfully clear poly lenses in about a hundred different colors/shades.  I have no relationship w/ them other than as a customer.

Look at secondhand Pilla, and Randolph Rangers (lenses are cheaper).  Pilla Blade frames, look on Shootbay and the other bay.

Oakleys?

The Wiley X would be fine if you use them with contacts.

I've used Oakley flak jackets for years and been very pleased. Far better than m frames for me.

Ed Lyons is the chap to see, he knows his onions and won't spoil the broth...
