having tried a 15mm raised rib today, i'm just curious what disciplines these ribbed guns are/were designed for and why use them?

Looking at teh world cup in london, only Ed Ling used a 15mm raised rib out of the finalists, the rest flat. Yet in the qualifiers several used them.

In the double trap loads if not all had them.

Is it of use for ABT/UT/OT? whats the theory behind them? And why the range of 15-50mm raised ribs?

The only thing i can think of is around head positioning and better visibility when holding the gun high?

Does anyone on here use one and if so why?

the raised ribs were originally for trap ( though people are using them for sporting too now ) and its just a matter of personal pref. if you like them or not . I think the idea behind them is so you cover the clay with the rib and if the gun is set up correct the 'theory' is you should hit clays easier as as said all you do is cover the clay. I managed to get hold of a beautiful miroku with a high rib … the build quality was superb and it was about 20yrs old … but i couldn't get on with it at all . … my opinion now is it doesn't matter if its a trap gun or sporter … as long as it fits you and you are comfortable shooting it then use it.

If you are thinking of buying one try it first ^_^
