As a general rule I don’t like shooting Rabbits with a shotgun, they taste far too good to waste any meet and usually I would use my 17 and head shoot every time.

On our shoot there is any area that is getting really hit by rabbits and the farmer has the hump (mind you, it seems that all farmers have the hump at all times) so I need to reduce numbers. The problem is that there isn’t really a way to get to them with HMR but they will easily bolt from by over enthusiastic cocker.

Shotgun is therefore the obvious choice but I always eat anything edible that I shoot and I am keen to keep meat damage down.  I generally would use my go to gamthe cartridge (Dark Storm 30g no 6) but I’m wondering if larger shot through a slower cartridge would cause less damage, mostly due to fewer shot in pattern.

Appreciate thoughts.

If you want less shot in the pattern use an open choke or perhaps even take them a tad later but overall I don't think you can beat 6's for rabbits. I prefer 7's for pigeon but whenever I have tried larger shot it has appeared to cause more bruising and haemorrhaging if anything so may well be the same for rabbit.
