I think what you are talking about is Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD). As you age your eyeball can become less gelatinous and pull away from the retina sometimes causing tears or even detachment.
It happened to me in early September, I noticed something wrong one night and went to the local treatment centre next morning and was sent to eye department and had laser treatment that afternoon to 'spot weld' around a small tear so no more came away.
It started with a butterfly shaped shadow in my right eye along with a lot of black dots, but now have just a few black dots and occasional small shadow.
Following laser treatment was told to take it easy for a couple of weeks to allow the area to scar over and not risk a further tear.

Get it checked out asap. DO NOT LEAVE IT dont think that's the end of it because the flashing has stopped. Get an emergency eye appointment with your optician in the morning. If there's no appointment available ask them to do a triage sheet or go directly to A&E at the hospital.

Better to confirm that it's not a PVD. if it is get it sorted as quickly as possible as it will become a much bigger issue if there is a tear in the retina.

Thank you very much for your reply guys .Just to clarify I did go to a&e eye clinic they told me my eyes were in good condition but I had PVD .I did tell them I was shotgun shooter but I did not get any response to that unfortunately ? They just said it was an age thing?? I am booked in to a shoot this thursday and am not sure if I should go or not ???

Advice is to avoid trauma or impact to the head and it may just have been coincidence but earlier in the day before my trouble we had taken the youngest grandson to the funfair. Whilst taking him on the dodgems there were a few heavy impacts from behind that gave me a real jolt.
I shot for the first time since last Thursday and all was ok (although looking at my score you would think I had shot with both eyes closed!).
I have read around the subject and my advice (for what it's worth) is that you should be ok to shoot but just be aware if any other symptoms develop to seek help ASAP. But stay out of a boxing ring.
