Hi Harley, I've got major neck problems and have been using RC2 Competition 24g 9.5 without to many problems. I've also used 21g Hull Comp X 9's which won't give you any bother.

Harley,

First things first.

You are trying to continue shooting without causing further damage to your back injury, so the lightest load with the least effects of recoil will be best for you.

Maxum has already said Fiona shoots VERY well with Eley subsonics. They do take a little getting used to picture wise but are good.

But may I suggest a 21 gram or 24 gram load for the following reasons, I have shot Hull Comp X, and Pro's also Express 21 gram ALL are very soft to shoot 21 gram of 9's gives you 440 pellets. 24 grams of 9's gives you 492 pellets more than enough if you put them in the right place.

Richard Faulds allegedly shot the English skeet championship with 6 1/2's which gave him 305 pellets to play with but considerably more recoil to cope with. He didn't do too badly.

In a nutshell I think that 21 grams will do the business for you without harming you.

My sympathy Harley, as you know I too have back problems.

Now bearing in mind I know nothing about sporting, I think for a start light load is defo the way to go I have never shot 21g but I find 24g is pretty much recoil free, at least the eley VIP or fiochi top one or Fblu that I have shot are. I dont know your back problem or your shooting style but from my experience if you are still suffering with 24g then I would take a good look at your shooting style as this may need to be altered in order to protect your back. I doubt very much that going lower than 24g will have any benefit, as you know its really down to bad posture / twisting wrong etc. This is were the problem lies in trying to find a style/posture that suits you and enables you to manage your condition now this "probably" will not be text book and many people with good intention will tell you your doing it wrong but stuff em. Find a comfortable way to shoot and persevere till you crack it otherwise you will do more damage then your in trouble. As I have said I know nothing about sporting so cant help with any ideas as to what stlye / posture to adopt but advise I may be able to give on trap if you need it.

Harvey,

I too suffer back problems, but I don't think that it is related to recoil. I've had a couple of operations and, as long as I am careful and sensible, manage to get along without any traumas.

However at this time of the year my back problems resurface and I have now traced it to the start of the game shooting season. I stand with a 12 bore at the ready on six stands during the day with my gun closed, waiting for birds. This can be for up to half an hour depending on the speed of the beaters.

My ostepath has likened it to holding an eight pound dumbell out in front of you - something I wouldn't dream of!

What I am trying to get at is that it is far more likely to be your foot positioning or gun hold, than a recoil issue.

Hope you sort it out soon, as backs are awful when they go wrong.

Oh, and try yoga. I am a 16 stone ex rugby player who poo poo'd this for ages, but I have started going and it has helped enormously.

standing still for long period's of time, muscle spasm, Stretching exercises.

There you go three more of us with broken backs all pretty much concur its not recoil but position that is the danger. I find that i need to shoot a more upright stance than i used to and i dont hold the gun in the target address position ie in the shoulder for long, its focus mount gun and call for target. Then usually followed by a beep or honk :)

Got back problems,,,,,,,,,?

See Doctor ask for Tramadol,,,,,,,100mg tabs

Sorry Matt but I did remember BING
Not quite rob

B anter = fluffy rabbits

G oogle = bingle (I used bingle, but other search engines are available, like bing)

Simples

I shoot skeet with my husband and we use Eley Blues 24gram 9s as suggested by a very good skeet instructor. I went from 11 to 21 score in a mater of weeks. with minimal recoil theres very little second barrel muzzle flip.
