It's not just about shells through the gun.

Less volume practiced correctly is more important.

If head lifting is a real problem it could be fit, stance, etc- hard to say without watching.

Notice though if you pick 10 top guys you will see 10 ways of doing it. Get someone to help build a style that works for YOU whilst keeping an eye on the basics.

Always more than one way to skin a cat...

I don't believe many get to know their true peak talent wise, you need a LOT of shells to find out but most of us hit a plateau of innate self belief, we all have that ceiling of confidence.
This is true, if you believe you are a B class shooter you will shoot B class scores whereas if you believe you are top gun material you will accomplish, I have won high gun against the odds and against very good shooters on rare occasions BUT on each occasion for some reason I had a real confidence and NEW I was going to win. Unfortunately I find this level of confidence difficult to replicate.

Don't worry Shaun....I improved Will by standing behind him saying &anker...works a treat....

Remember....we have a date soon.....I can always help with the same

I have recently come across 3 different cases of the same problem. Not head lifting, more head dropping, or more correctly poor gun mounting. Whilst shooting with the usual group of coffin dodgers (myself included) at Catton Hall last Wednesday, after 4 stands it was plain to see that one of the guys was having an off day. He was using the same gun cartridge combination and his gun fits him. When we came to a simple teal target, I could see that he was clearly shooting a foot to the left of the clay, as he was about to shoot the next bird I shouted "left eye shut" and he dusted it but complained that the gun had 'smacked' his face. (headlifting) . When we came off range I checked his gun mount, from the front. The stock was catching or snagging on the imitation suede patches on his waterproof shooting coat and not coming up to meet his face. He was therefore dropping his head to the stock and looking straight at the top lever, his left eye was then taking over. A quick change of jacket back to his usual skeet vest, a couple of stands with the gun pre mounted and then, a simple incomer, so back to gun down and job done. I had seen the same thing with a different shooter the week previous, he was convinced that his stock had 'bent' whilst in the gun cabinet. A few minutes of gun mounting in front of a mirror proved to him, that if he kept his head still and brought the gun up to his face, his previously 'fitted' gun, suddenly fitted him again.

Well time for an update after another dreadful performance today! it has occured to me the biggest problem could be down to orange clays on a green background leaving me with no  idea of where the barrels are in relation to the clay this often leads to head lifting so maybe some different colour lenses may help! answers on a post card :prankster:

Purple.

You can try mine when we go for a ping at Owls.

Pilla 46N Outlaw X
I have had the same issue Shaun; Orange on Green/trees and came to the same conclusion that I need a Pilla 46N for my Panthers.

Also, regarding Top Shot Magic; apart from their extensive "Sight Picture Catalogue"...they have consistency.  Those stands where you drop 1 or two targets...are due to consistency...you already know you can hit them.  So work on consistency. Hold points, look points and so on.

A good place for that, is at JJ's.   Nothing especially testing (usually), but 12 targets per stand...it isn't easy to hit 12 ex 12 all the time :)

cant comment on lens shaun but I am sure that after your post yesterday you almost certainly went out and thought about everything in other words you tried too hard which from my experience is disastrous.

Your right there Ian was very agricultural today for want of a better word missing absolute sitters so all a bit frustrating to say the least especially the orange clays with green back drop not a pleasant sight to watch :fie:  may consider switching to Skeet for a change!

I feel your pain shaun. You just have to ride it out mate.

Don't worry Ed.....he is coming to shoot with mother

I used to shoot with a guy that would get really pissed at me cuz if things were not going well I would mumble to myself.  He said that the only only words he really understood were an occasional "mother" mixed int there.

Sometimes it can be a good idea to get back to basics, I did it earlier this year, I also changed gun and had a bit of tuition at the same time. No miracle cure but my scores are slightly better and more consistent than before I went back to basics!

Nothing to do with size.

When I brought my K80 I had to learn to shoot again, more than likely because I never knew how to shoot correctly in the first place.

Find a coach, have a lesson.

Personally make sure you enjoy it or its game over.

18 months on I am still rebuilding to where I was, but enjoying it again :)
