I went down to Shoreham yesterday afternoon / evening to

1)Try and see if i could put an idea i had when shooting last weekend into practice ..

2) Get some additional practice  in :)

2x layouts on offer  :-

Layout one, was more closer  stuff , and layout two was a mix of high low and incoming / going away ..

After watching a couple of rounds  to get the feel of it, i went for layout two ..

One of the things i wanted to see was,  would my head position give me an improvement, as i have a suspicious feeling i'm too far back on the stock.

So i conciously made the effort to get well forward during the mount.

First round was interesting   11ex25 not bad i thought , allthough a long way off  the 20 / 23 ex's that were happening elsewhere on the stands.

I moved onto the first layout .  and unfortunatly didnt fare as well, 8ex25.    hmmm

I went back to the first layout and tried another round, and again 11ex25  so some consistancy..

Have to say i quite enjoyed it,  certainly one i would have another go at  :)

and a nice venue too :)

I think my mount / eye position  is part of the problem, so i'm going to have a play with the comb position before next week, and give it another  go

Shoreham, near the old cement works. On the a283 ( steyning bypass ) About 1/2 mile back towards the A27 from the cement works or a mile north of the big roundabout under the A27 at shoreham. Little farm gate on the East side of the road.

Great little shoot run by Dave Peckham and family.

Free tea, coffee, burgers and sausage bbq! Thursday evenings from about 4 onwards. Occasionals Saturdays too.

Hopefully the plans for the cement works announced yesterday don't blow the shoot out of the water in the future!

I've not managed to get down there more than once this season because of work :(

Indeed,  not the easiest of places to find ,,,,,  hello farmyard, and sittiing like a lemon for almost an hour ..

Santa I sound like a stuck record but I still maintain your stock is too long xxx

Have you got a recoil pad fitted, Santa?  When I recently changed guns the DT10 I bought was too long in the stock, but by taking the recoil pad off it reduced the stock length by and inch and was about right for me.  That allowed me to shoot my new gun while I was waiting for the gunsmith to sort out the alternative stock I'd bought for it.

I wouldn't suggest that you shoot all the time with no pad, but it might be worth taking it off and having a go just to see if shortening it would be a benefit?

You didn't say hello to me..............I arrived at 7.00pm so you may have already left and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt! ;)

 .  , i'm going to go and see a gunsmith shortly  :)

:santa: x
See one that knows how to hold a gun. Don't alter the gun to fit an ill-holding shooter. It's a bit chicken and egg, as the gun needs to be about right to start with for you to develop a nice stance / mount.

Spent a good hour with my local gunsmiths this morning.

At this stage is was purely a chat and basic setting session ...

He assesed my current set up and confirmed

Current stock length too long  :)

Cast incorrect  set up for LH not RH

Comb setting incorect

At this initial stage he didnt want to go chopping the stock, as there are other ways of reducing the length.

We took everything back to scratch, and reset the comb to  "0"  then he checked the stock for its cast... it is a RH stock

The length was next, and we took about 1/4 inch off my current set up  by chaging the butt pad

He then started in little increments adjusting the cast first, and checking with me by doing repeated mounts.   until we had a good cast dialed in to suit me

Then we looked at comb rib relationship, and again starting from "0" we worked the comb height over several aiming points

I had one smith looking side on, and the other looking from the barrels back so they could get an idea of where everything was

From an initial all off the comb we have raised is slightly at the front  just to clear the breach.

Then we discussed next steps ...  what to observe with presentations, and where i will be shooting with my new set up

NO tinkering is allowed :),  he would like me to shoot it over the summer, and after 6 months go back and see him again to see if we need to do any further work,  taking into account its not an instant class transformation,  but will require some effort on my behalf

if after that, theres no improvement  we may  spend some time with a trygun via some of the other establishments.

And he recoomended some lessons with a good coach

I took some pics before and after,  just to see if there were any  differences i'll have a look through them later

Forgot to add, it feels more repeatable when i mount, (not sure if its psycological though at this stage)

Good stuff. Just make sure you shoot thinking "clay". Don't even consider the gun being altered.
Thats exacly what he said...  and ive been told .. no tinkering   (not for 6 months at least)
