Today I shoot a 60 bird, and fell back into this confusion zone again, only hit a third of the targets .

One of the tutors here, i presume must of felt a little sorry for me, he grabbed me and took a few mins to explain a few things afterwards.

First he tore a hole in the centre of a piece of paper and told me to hold it at arms length, looking at a object through the hole, I had to bring the paper up to my face, this was done a couple of times and proved I'm right eye dominant, as the paper ended up going over to my right eye as it got close (bloody good way of testing as well).

So then he asked me what leed I'm giving the long crossers (45 -55 yards), I said I ain't got a Danny, I've tried 1ft 2ft 3ft 4ft and then back to starting shooting lower and higher etc, it was a bloody nightmare, anyhow he told me to point at the area I wanted to kill this target, and hold my finger pointing at the kill area , then I called for a target and waiting for the target to hit my finger I had to say "bang" but be conscious of where the target was once I had called "bang" look past my finger, this then gave me a very rough indication of what kind of leed I needed to work on, I was amazed as I needed to give somewhere around 7 ft, and never in a month of Sundays would I ever give that much leed, I then put two carts in and shot em both straight off.

It just goes to show how far out I was.

Again the help was very welcomed, so now I come away with an imprinted image of what I should be doing, great..

Regardless of my scores, If I can come away from a shoot and take something with me, on what I learned then I'm happy.

Cheers

H.

Yep. As I said to you the other day, most longer targets are missed behind.

But, you didn't go "back into this confusion zone". Last time you hit 51%, this time you hit 33%...previously you were hitting 5%.

This is peaks and troughs, not getting it wrong.

I think someone on here suggested, for crossers 1ft per 10 yards and half that for quartering...I know you read that too...the trouble is, you can't remember everything, all at once on the stand. The more you know, to begin with...the worse you get...because you are trying to remember it all, while shooting!

Were you shooting on your own, or with your mates again?

Fancy coming down on Sunday?

Just found out tonight, It's our club shoot on Sunday, its a private club and I'm a probabtional member, so I need to show willing, otherwise I would come, I actually really fancied the Skeet at Dartford, but again that's on Sunday I think..

Yes shooting with one mate, and two guys I never met before, they were quite helpfull tbh.

Keep it up, I am a year in now and take every comp every week as a new set of targets to learn and beat, everyone you beat is another in the memory and puts you another step forward. Your be surprised where you are this time next year and what scores you are hitting!

Cheers, I intend to keep it up as long as I can. ;-)

I was told something tonight..

I should take lessons up to the point I don't need to ask any more questions.

I think if you took lessons up to the point you didn't need to ask questions you would be having lessons most of your life.

If learning to shoot is a question of shooting every variation of target and building a memory bank of sight pictures, ask yourself, how long would it take to read and memorise every book in a library?

Make haste slowly, but importantly learn something every time you shoot and more importantly, enjoy yourself whilst doing it.

H, someone gave me a tip for long cossers when I started sporting - if you miss the first time, double the leeed, then if you still miss, work backwards. This, of course, presupposes that you're not shooting a foot in front of a 45 yarder! When you're practising, give it loads, then loads more, then work backwards. Once you've found it, shoot it over and over to stamp the picture in your mind.

Take a lesson or two, then shoot with your mates, then a lesson or two etc etc. As Salopian said, it takes time! You're getting there mate, just keep at it and ENJOY!! ;) :D
