I’ve been reliably informed by santas elf that I can have some shooting glasses, up to a budget of £50-£60, for Christmas. I just wondered, are the Evolution Aero 4 a good buy for a first year novice, or is there a better choice out there. Or even 1 pair over a multiple set.

Any advice is welcome, as all I’m using at the moment is a clear pair of safety glasses.

If you shop around you might be able to get a set of BLOC Hulk glasses. I'm sure there's other people with more experience that can better advise you, but for me they've been brilliant. There's also quite a few at my local ground that wear them and rate them highly as well.

I’ve had Rangers with inserts then Pilla’s with inserts. Rangers for me every time but I’m fed up with having to change them prescription wise every few years at a considerable cost. Will H on here has always recommended the safety glasses from Specsaves so just had an eye test, prescription changed again so asked them about the safety glasses. Brought two pairs, both prescription, one yellow lens and the other brown. Picked out my frames which were buy one get one free and even with prescription lenses it was a total of £70 for the pair.

Used them for the first time last week (yellow) and was very impressed with them. They do non prescription lens so worth a look at for the price.

I’m actually due an eye test, so that’s not a bad idea. Did you find a particular frame that’s suitable for shooting? I’m new to this but I know they should sit differently to normal glasses.

They actually had “sports” frames, but Will had advised to go with “big” frames. The ones I got are sunglasses frames but bigger than I would normally go for or my day to day/holiday glasses. Must admit, they don’t look like shooting glasses but they do the job, they are up to the standard, they are comfortable to wear, the yellow was really good and I’m not one to follow the fashion or wear something because everyone else is wearing them.

Have your test done, ask about the safety lenses, and then pick your frames. Had them back in less than a week. Contact Will on here, (PM him) I did, he gave me really good advise and tbh wouldn’t go back to the other ones now.

I’m going to do it 👍. The fact I can get 2 pairs of prescription glasses for that seems really good. Plus I know they’ll fit etc. Thanks for your help.

Fantastic idea but will they do safety lenses in a tint?

Apparently yes, Donna had safety glasses in yellow and brown, and I believe Will has done the same. If they didn’t for some reason I wouldn’t go down that route.

To be fair you don’t need a ‘ safety ‘ lens . By that I mean a kite marked BS or E marked thing that you’d wear at work . Any plastic lens in a quality frame will save your vision from clay fragments . A pair of industrial safety specs or ( even goggles) to any standard won’t save you from a shotgun discharged at your head from the next stand .

If you look at the possibility of eye damage shooting clays, yes it’s possible , but the probability of a shooting incident are exceptionally low , the probabilities of clay fragments , particularly on a sporting course are high , so that’s what you’d protect against .

I’ve just been reliably informed that as you suggest, I don’t need specific safety glasses, as all their lenses are shatterproof. Which makes it even simpler.

Going back to Will's recommendations, he was keen on Ultradrive lenses which I bought at the time with my 2 for the price of 1 Specsavers deal. (Imagine a medium brown lens but brightened up with yellow (they are not sun glasses)) These lenses are designed to increase contrast which they do well. Specsavers don't appear to advertise them but can do them to your prescription if you ask. I also use mine for driving in bright conditions.

Some while later, I believe they offered a paler version which I might go for next time because I tend not to wear mine on gloomy days when I prefer my clear lenses.

I didn't go for an oversize pair of frames and have never felt the need, I did choose steel rims to keep distraction to a minimum.

for what it’s worth , I’ve just had my Zeiss Sport specs reglazed with a new prescription after a clay strike . For anybody living within a driving distance of Barnsley I’ll give a shout out for https://www.barnsleyoptical.co.uk/services/

Recommended by a fellow shooter , and I only live 15 minutes away . The finished Mid Purple lens is perfect .

Not an optician , so you need your prescription , and in an old industrial unit not a slick shop , but the guy who makes the glasses is very knowledgeable on shooting and tints etc . Like finding Aladdin’s cave ! I’ll be back for new driving specs ! They do postal as well IMG_8888.jpeg

I use the Laksen interchangeables. From a size perspective, I'd say they're similar to an aviator or the above ZS. I've never felt I don't have a big enough field of vision.
