Good idea. When I go to my family home, my mates in a local club have a Monday night shoot of 20 ABT and 30 sporting.  Invariably we/he scores well in the sporting but the ABT is a lot more difficult than I expected.  Guess there may have been a post or two on this theme before.........   ;)
ABT is not what it used to be, in fact it's a sore subject with quite a few of us old timers!!! They changed it without good reason and without consultation!!!

Did someone mention abt.

Still the best discipline in my humble opinion, even better than ot but i know many would disagree.

But they wrecked it Ian.........it's just not BALL TRAP anymore!!!!!!!  As Fred said some time ago, the likes of us have seen the best days of  trap shooting. We now have all manner of idiots running about the place changing things for no good reason, without a thought for us grass roots shooters who actually keep the associations, clubs and gunshops in business!!! Rant over......I shall go to my room now.....

Agree it aint what it was but what is ?

the only thing that has never been tampered with is dtl.

we as old school have indeed had the best of it BUT rose tinted specs and the virtues of relative youth on our side, maybe ?

either way abt is still imo the most demanding discipline, arguably even more so now.

Apart from Helice.....just saying

Oh yes forgot abut that

edit

apart from helice

Ive just inadvertently upgraded by being forced to look for the lowest recoil possible from an O/U for me due to an old sporting injury which was making clay shooting somewhat painful and not very enjoyable. So Krieghoff + Isis + XPad it is. If I hadn't had the need to search for the lowest possible recoil combination I would not have changed guns. If its not broken....dont break it

Why don't you try a bit of trap shooting? They have good layouts at Bisley and as far as I know the NCSC still have a few coaches on site too.
You could also go to Bisley Shooting Ground which is up by the William Evans shop.  You leave your SGC or FAC in exchange for an electronic plug and drive off camp up Queens Drive for a bout a mile and turn into the woods on the left where there is a huge sporting layout which is plug and play with your electronic plug.  Shoot what you want , return the plug to the club, pay for your targets and get your certificates back!

Enough said..

Seriously though, Some good advice in the posts above.  Spend the money on shooting for now...Shoot well enough with what he's got,and get one given....Job done

oh yes me old mate it is certainly demanding, maybe too demanding for a stepping stone from dtl to ot.

What's changed I only shoot it once or twice a year so no expert.the only thing I noticed was the stands being straight not curved as before.

Upgrading is an interesting topic, generally as a few have said before, the upgrade is inspirational and comes with an expectation scores improve. That said, I would upgrade if one of the following conditions exist:

1. The gun needs a lot of adjustment, so a youngster who has maybe out grown the original dimensions

2. The current gun develops a technical fault and its not worth spending the money to repair

3. The gun is causing discomfort, too much recoil etc

I use a MK38 that has been modified to my liking, seems to do the job for me, have looked at switching to something else but nothing really ticked all the boxes and I realised it wouldn't change much

Angles not as wide but distance greater and faster speed.

Speed increased to OT speed, angles narrowed slightly, height increased on low target and high target.

Theoretically it should be easier or the same as it was, but it isn't it is harder and the statistics confirm that it is.

So there..

I think ABT is a sore subject for some of us old timers mate!!!

Yes I agree les, but it is what it is and we just need to adapt to it as best we can. you never know it could revert back or change again in the future, who knows.
