Statement from

National Skeet Shooting Association

For all our friends who may not know yet; Wayne Mayes was involved in an accident at his home on Monday afternoon which left him badly burned. Below is an update from John Haugh who spoke with Linda:

"Hey all of our shooting community: I spoke with Linda this morning. She said that the doctors said Wayne had a "good day" yesterday. They have thoroughly examined his eyes and there are no lacerations etc. That is great news. If Wayne has another "good day" today, taking fluids, stabilizing, etc. they might start skin graft operations as early as Thursday. They keep Wayne sedated for pain management but he is able to hear Linda. The ICU is small and for protection from possible infection there is no visitation.
He is not out of the woods yet, but the doctors were pleased with yesterday’s progress.
This is a marathon for Wayne and they say he has to take it one day at a time. Linda has some family/friends support around her.
At this point we need to continue our prayers and positive thoughts for the both of them and the medical folks taking care of Wayne."

Awful accident  -  60% burns I heard !

We can only hope and pray for a recovery, but it will be a slow process for sure.

My thoughts go out to Wayne and his family.

For those reading this that cannot / do not know who he is and what he has achieved and why Ray has chosen to post this on the forums, i will try to put this into context:-

He is simply put, probably the greatest American skeet shooter of all time. He has broken 200 x 100 straights with the .410 alone. Won over 40 world titles, completed several 500 ex 500 scores and even more 400 ex 400 scores in the events he has won skeet shooting. These is nothing that Wayne has not achieved.

He conducts clinics all over and has even travelled to the UK to do so. He was a huge influence on our very own Craig Lakey (who i am sure will be devastated) as a young shooter who went to the USA and lived with Wayne & his family learning to shoot.

If you were to transfer his level to another sport your talking about people of the level of - Muhammed Ali, Jack Nicklaus, Pele - All giants of there sport.

This is why when i walked into my local club yesterday that ALL the skeet shooters knew what had happened.

Here are a couple of You Tube video's of him shooting / coaching.

Update on Wayne Mayes, from John Haugh:

"Doctors say Wayne doing well. They are impressed with his heart strength. Bandages come off from the first graft on Monday.  :)

Glad Wayne is on the mend.

Ray, look at that 200th straight video.  Put in on HD and  go to 0:45...is that Charlie Lucas?

EDIT:  I just paused on the score card...yes it was!

Yes that's Charlie, he usually stays with Wayne when he is over in America. :nyam:

Update on Wayne -- and something you can do to help!

Wayne will be going back into surgery this Thursday for more graft work. Many of you have asked, 'What can I do besides pray?' Well, now there IS something we can do. It is normal for a lot of blood to be used during skin graft surgeries. It is not uncommon for a burn patient to need 4 liters of blood during a single surgery. The BMAC burn center in San Antonio (where Wayne is) is having a blood drive tomorrow [Wednesday] starting at 7 a.m. They need O positive and O negative. If you live in the San Antonio area, please donate blood in Wayne's name. If you do not live in San Antonio, you can still go donate in his name to a local burn center or hospital.

Whilst the alleged circumstances of his accident seem a little suspect [apparently "burning some old gunpowder" or some such], it doesn't stop me from wishing him a speedy  and as a full a recovery as can be expected. 60% burns is usually a death sentence.

Latest update today on Wayne Mayes, from John Haugh:

"Every day is a struggle for Wayne. Some days are a little better than others. I can remember Wayne having a 'bad' day at skeet. Probably shooting a 98 or 99. I used to think that my best days at shooting were not as good as his worst days. I look forward to the day when he will again take the field and be 'amayesing'. Wayne will undergo another surgery this week. Folks, remember that although he has fought this for close to two months, it is still the beginning of a long journey. Typically for every day in the hospital it requires 7 days of physical therapy. Many have gone on with their lives, as they should, since this horrific accident, but that doesn't mean we can't all take a little time each day to reflect on our own luck and to thank and pray for the people that make this possible for us and for Wayne and his family."

A very touching tribute by Todd in this months Skeet Shooting review. Best wishes Wayne.

Wayne Mayes. A post I was hoping never to make. Wayne passed away this morning due to complications from his accident.

There is a more detailed post on the NSSA Facebook page.

Please respect Linda's privacy and DO NOT call or text .

Per Wayne's wishes there will be no funeral, May he rest in peace
