Very sad to see one of the worlds finest shooters pass away. That said, Wayne lived for his shooting and at his age, with such terrible injuries, life would have been an awful struggle. Next time I shoot a skeet target i'll give him a thought.

As I said on Facebook, Very sad news. Only just starting out in skeet and he is one of the first guys I search for on youtube for tips. RIP a man that truly deserves the title Legend.

The following email has been sent to the CPSA. I felt it a shame that the passing of a shooter of Wayne's calibre is not noted in some way.

I wonder if the CPSA would consider placing a notice under the obituaries section following the death of Wayne Mayes. As you may be aware, Wayne suffered serious burns following an accident at his home three months ago and had been in hospital since. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

Wayne has been a leading competitor in NSSA skeet for the past two decades and had shot a record number of high scores across the gauges that stand to this day. He is considered by many, both in the USA and the UK, to be the finest skeet shooter ever to have held a gun and whilst most will not know him personally, many have benefitted from his tuition over the years.

Whilst I realise NSSA skeet is not a discipline recognised by the CPSA there are many in the UK that shoot it regularly. Shooters of Wayne's ability are rare and it would seem sad that the CPSA, as the governing body of the sport, do not mark his passing.

Anyone that wishes to send their condolences to Wayne's wife and family may do so through the NSSA/NSCA website.

Would someone be kind enough to write a short Obituary for me to place on ShootClay - I don't know Wayne, or his shooting record - but I agree, shooters of this calibre and skill should recognised.

Any links to a pic to post with it would be useful as well.

[email protected]  will get it to my inbox, I promise to get it online asap afterward.

I'll send over a few pictures on Wayne and you can decide which one to use.

A short Obituary is no problem give me a day or so to complete, how short 200 words ?

I got to know Wayne when I was the pro at the Dallas Gun Club.  I still laugh at his jokes, he was a great guy.  Rest in peace.

What a terrible week for skeet shooting, i've just learnt that within a few hours of Wayne's death, Cyndi Bender, wife of Todd, has also passed away. Todd and Cyndi had been married for many years. Todd was also a good friend and long term shooting partner of Wayne. I can't imagine how he must be feeling at the moment.

274368,

I heard about Cyndi Bender yesterday morning when i arrived in from work. Devastated for Todd losing his best friend and Wife within a day of each other. He contacted me today to say that it is the out pouring of support from friends and skeet shooters the world over that is getting him through....

Below is taken from the NSSA website:- http://www.nssa-nsca.org/index.php/2013/06/cyndi-bender-passes-away/

We ask that you respect Todd’s privacy at this very difficult time to allow him to grieve with his family. Services will be private.

Todd requests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Cyndi make a donation in her memory to a charity that has been very dear to Todd and Cyndi, the Navy SEAL Foundation. Donations may be made payable to the Navy SEAL Foundation and sent to:

  1. Navy SEAL Foundation
    Cyndi Bender Memorial
    285 Graystone Way
    Alpharetta, GA 30005

Thanks Ray - 200 words would be perfect.
The National Skeet Shooting Association is putting a tribute to Wayne Mayes next Wednesday on their website, so instead of the Obituary I will place a link to their website once it has been posted. :nyam:

Wayne was a great sportsman and a real gentleman - I met him on more than one occasion in the US & UK both on and off the skeet fields. He always had time to answer queries and provide words of encouragement. I think that more shooters in this country would do well to follow his example then skeet shooting would be all the better for it.
