I was told by a gunsmith that if you did not use snap caps, your firing pin/ springs may be good for 200,000 releases (average), if you use snap caps you would get a little more at 200,010 uses (average). So, my opinion was made, it probably isn't worth the money.

I used them as new shooter because I got caught up in all the must have gadgets etc, but since I've stopped using them, I get no dramas either. So once again, I don't see a need for them.

They make good paper weights if you buy the brass ones. Other than that a total waste of time and effort.

They're not bad for practising catching spent cartridges either at home, but do it over carpet. Good skill to learn to catch your empties, makes life a lot easier! :) if your right handed trap the butt inbetween your right elbow and body, pull forend down with left hand, catch cartridges with your right hand as they eject, dispense empties into adjacent bin with anger, try to look cool at all times!

I suppose you could just use already Spent cartridges for that though....apart from these Snap Cap thingies everyone, is there anything else accessory wise that a newbie, like me, would probably think they need, but actually don't ?

You need to fire the gun in order for it to eject and as people have said the firing pin can go through the primer and stick, locking the gun shut effectively, so not the best idea. And yes shooting is bu far the collest sport ever. You will also need:

Decent baseball cap

Shooting glasses

Gloves

Wet weather gear

Cartridge bag

Clay shooting bag

Gun slip

Cleaning kit and many many products

Skeet vest

Shooting coat

Snap caps

Extended chokes

Towel or drying cloth

Ear protection

The list goes on and on and on!

Blimey...thats quite a shopping list...I have a few of those things hanging around already, they weren't intended for shooting but they will do,...hoping I can do a few deals when I come to buy my gun...or I might just start buying a few bits at a time, while I save up for my gun. :)

Cartridges to go in your cartridge bag would be useful!

I just shout "BANG" I hit just as many and it saves me a fortune

Everytime ive been for a lesson, the guns we use are straight from there slips,  no snap caps,

To me (as a non shooter )  unless the gun is to be used, then they should be empty....

Quick Q,  do guns at gunsmith's have snap caps in them?

just replaced all the main springs in my auto thats 40+ years old. the action spring alone was 2" shorter than the new one and it now shoots like a totally different gun.
Would you say the trigger pull is now slightly heavier?

Always used them. Got them for free with an o/u so just kept on using them. Did just pay out for a new firing pin though on the 2nd barrel at the same time as getting it serviced (still had its original from 1977)!
