Now I apologise in advance for this extremely beginner question, but it's something I've been wondering about.

Let's say you are going to a clay shooting site for a few practice clays.

What do you do with your cartridges? And how many do you take?

Do you have a bag in your car with 5 boxes in, and you go to the car and empty 25 into you skeet vest or pouch?

Do you carry a shoulder bag with 100 cartridges in and simply reach into it until its empty?

Do you just carry a few boxes around and sit them on the floor near you?

Or what do you do?

Thanks for your time (and patience).

Owen

I will chuck a slab in the car and I have a "range bag" with all my kit like glasses, ear plugs, choccy, juice, waterproofs etc that I put 4 or 5 boxes in to carry round with me. If I want more than the 100 odd I am carrying I will then go back to the car and replenish :)

something like one of these http://www.uttings.c...ldalls-bumbags/

more here http://www.uttings.co.uk/Category/539/cartridge-bags-pouches/

Edit, no need to spend a fortune on a beretta/browning etc bag, any small sports holdall will do the job just as well and cheaper :D

No stupid questions round here, just people wanting to learn ;)

Pretty much the same as Fuzrat but I use a rucksack. 250 in the car but I normally take 5 boxes with me in the rucksack because even if you do a round of 100 you may need a spare or two.

Thanks very much.

What about when actually shooting?

Do you just tip a box in a vest pocket?

What ever you are comfortable with.

You'll need an amount for shooting the stand.

Let's say 8 to 12.

I have a box (25) in each side to be topped up on the way round depending on the layout.

Powenb are you a beginner shooter or are you not a shooter at all? I am curious.

Normally beginners ask many questions about the shotguns and the cleaning on them and shooting different targets.

What 'clay shooting sites' have you visited up to now and did you enjoy shooting at them?

Have you got a licence yet? If you have not then please make sure that you do not touch cartridges outside of a shooting lesson.

Hope to hear more from you.

Hi Nicola,

I am expecting my first license in the next 2 weeks.

I have done plenty of shooting in the past. I grew up on a farm and we always have plenty of pigeons to take care of.

We also shoot there regularly as my brother has a gun/licence.

So I know all about gun safety etc.

I have been to Lakenheath and High Lodge for supervised tuition. High Lodge will be my local hang out once I get my shotgun.

But going to one of these places as a newby is quite intimidating.

Thanks

Owen

ps I know all about the cleaning/care etc and am also doing a lot of research on the gun itself.

do what ever you want, ive seen people bring cartridges in carrier bags and buckets in the past.

Most people I see use shooting vests or cartridge pouches attached to a belt to hold their cartridges whilst shooting. Personally I have never got on with a vest so I bought a cartridge pouch that will hold 25 shells plus a few spares, you can get these anywhere from £10 up to £70-80 for the leather/suede ones. All you do is top up your pouch/vest as required, as I shoot skeet, that is normally between rounds.

Thanks for reply......welcome aboard.

(just checking that you were not an investigative reporter for the daily rag about to release a headline 'How armed are you?'.......'shooters carry 100's of cartridges on their person etc etc etc'...............)

I knew I had something missing choccy, juice and a bucket incase of emergencys :D

The key question is whether to use a Plastic or Tin bucket for cartridges... ?

Owen,

It's worth taking note of the following.

Take more than enough to cater for no-birds, misfires etc.,

Take about 125 for competition and practice, and here is another tip, put 25 in your left hand pocket if your right handed, those are your cartridges to use for your targets, in your right hand pocket (if your right handed) put enough cartridges to keep your skeet vest straight and uncreased, this will assist smooth and snag free gun mounting.

Yep - sound advice, I bought a 100 cartridge bag (4 boxes) when I started (and before I had a skeet vest) and I ran out once, and had to borrow a couple of cartridges. Lesson learned.
