Well, I was cleaning my A400 down to removing the bolt carrier and giving it a good wipe down and a little oil where necessary . Now I have reassembled it and the bolt wont stay open to allow me to feed a cartridge straight into the barrel. I haven't tried feeding one into the magazine as being at home I wasn't keen to load live cartridges .

Any ideas.

Cheers

Turn the gun over, where the hole at the bottom has the magazine flap silver bit, slide your finger back to the little button and press it in.

Cheers Chubby. I think I have tried that if the button you refer to is the 2mm by 4mm metal one that pushes back towards the stock of the gun allowing the cover to hinge up to allow the magazine to be loaded. I will double check when I get home though.

At 6&7 they don't even know I have a gun in the house so unfortunately no help there plus if the wife saw my 6 year old with a shotgun I'd have to run faster than 1450fps.

Well I'm confused now. I just tried assembling the gun and the barrel will not slide home all the way. It's sits about 3-5mm out. I'm guessing the bolt assembly won't slide all the way home which is why it's not locking and this being out a bit is stopping the barrel doing the same.

Any ideas as I'd planned to go to Bisley tomorrow .

cheers

I know it is a bit long winded, but would you explain in step by step actions EXACTLY what bits you removed and in which order and then which bits and HOW you put them back together. I am not familiar with the 400, but have both a 391 and 303, which have been assembled/disassembled more times than I care to think about. If you have removed the bolt assembly from the receiver, are you sure you are getting the 'rat tail' at the base of the bolt assembly back into the right hole within the receiver (so to speak). Fitted back incorrectly will not allow the bolt to go back fully and lock nor will the barrel go fully home. If all else fails take the gun and the bits to Bisley, once again not a place that I have visited, but I feel certain that there will be someone there who will be able to assist you. You could also Goggle Beretta 400 dismantle and clean there will certainly be a blow by blow account on there, which could help.

Firstly many thanks for your help. .

Firstly the gun is stored barrel off as I stupidly bought a 30" semi auto not realising it was an overly long gun and it won't fit in my standard 3 gun case.

I removed the cap, slid off the forfend, then removed the cocking handle and slid the bolt assembly out. I then separated the gas piston and cleaned and polished it and decoded the exhaust ports. Wiped everything down oiled the rails for the bolt assembly and put it back together in reverse order. Once assembled I noticed the bolt assembly would not lock into position but all looked good. I then must of had the assembly on and off a dozen times, removed the trigger assembly to look and bits that could be broken but nothing.

then tonight I tried to assemble the gun in preparation for tomorrow and found the barrel would not go all the way home.

It sounds like this rat tail is the problem but how do I check this.

Westley many thanks you set me down the right path. The A400 does not have a rats tail but I read three articles found looking for rats tails looking for inspiration , (funny how three articles for different magazines/websites were identical bar a few and I mean a few word changes) they all kept mentioning this new rotating bolt and I remember seeing that the top of the bolt where it is guided to rotate seemed a little high but looked fine.

So I got it out and had a play and the guide bit came off and I found a hole that the firing pin should of gone through which would lower the bolt guide. So pin out, guide lowered into place( handy line on the top to show its inline), pin replaced and rail back in. Took all of 2-3 minutes and a problem that I spent 3-4 hrs on was resolved.

Gun cocks and barrel fits , Happy Days ?????

Cheers Mike

I did find that and watched it prior to dismantling the gun in the first place along with a much longer and more detailed one from Beretta from a guy in chinos about the camo version but all the online tutorials I could find gave only basic information and no tips on if anything is out of the norm.

never had this problem with my a400...did manage to shoot the firing pin across the room though
