I drove down to the Worlds this morning to shoot the Sportrap with Mr Potter this afternoon and the experience was well worth the effort! Steve and Alison put on a good event and I will definitely be returning to their shoots in the future
The catering was spot on, they had the Olypmics on so that we could watch Team GB get their first Gold of the Games and there was even a small trade presence there - i'll let Mr P tell you about his massage
We were on the 13.40 squad and upon booking in were told to be at the transport rendevous no later than half an hour before our designated start time. The transport (a mix of 4x4's and pick-ups) arrived bang on time and we were whisked a mile or so down the road to the four Sportrap layouts. Our squad was one light of the intended five so comprised of Mr P in stand 1, Tim Taylor in 2, myself in 3 and Thomas Prest in stand 4.
The first three layouts were all at ground level and here is the view from the back of the first towards the second and third:
All three of these layouts also had dedicated refs platforms for the scorers and buttoners to sit on affording them the luxury of being able to see over the shooters
Layout One was a steady start with the following targets:
A = Right to left roller that faded away from the shooter (medium distance)
B = Left to right lower and faster curling target (close)
C = Right to left dropper off the tower (bitch of a target)
D = Driven from the tower (could be shot as a crosser easily enough)
E = Left to right high roller (at distance)
I only dropped the C bird on stands 3,4 and 5 to card a 22. I knew that the C target wanted some, but it took me a while to realise that it need twice what i was giving it!
Layout Two was a little more testing with the addition of a couple of Battues:
A = Right to left crosser (rising and close)
B = Right to left Battue (medium speed and distance)
C = Right to left quartering away (pink clay)
D = Left to right quarting away (faster and higher than C)
E = Left to right Battue (faster and medium distance)
I thought that i'd only dropped another three in total on this layout to card another 22, but had been marked down as pair away instead of pair dead on stand 5, and as the ref had not called any losses didn't realise this until it was too late. Slightly miffed, but realising that there wasn't much i could do about it we mooched onwards to Layout 3.
Layout Three provided more variety via the following:
A = Teal (fast and going high)
B = Teal (slow and close pink clay)
C = Right to left roller that faded away after peaking (medium distance)
D = Overhead (approx 25ft high and medium speed)
E = Left to right midi (fast and medium distance)
I started the layout determined to earn back the two from the previous layout and would have been on course to do so but dropped the final pair to card a 20; still not too shabby for a part-timer.
Layout Four was a fitting finale and situated at the top of a purpose built platform for the event:
With three steady layouts under our collective belts, Steve had decided to ramp this one up a bit accoridngly:
A = Left to right crosser (fast pink clay)
B = Right to left curling incomer (slow and quite low pink clay)
C = Left to right midi looper (at distance)
D = Right to left crosser (medium speed white clay)
E = Going way low (white clay)
After a disasterous start (dropping four on my first stand) I clawed it back slightly to card a 16 and finish on a 78.
REALLY enjoyed the shoot today; good facilities, targets, staff and very enjoyable watching some of Team USA shooting too! I don't mind admitting that i am VERY envious of ayone shooting the rest of the events there this week - if i could i would too! Anyone know when the next Worlds will be in the UK?
