I think half the pistols in the UK ended up here on the island just prior to the ban,I love shooting them because it is so difficult in my opinion even harder than OT , took me 15 years and probably into the hundred of thousands of rounds to master it , I shoot mostly practical and PPC, very ammo heavy disciplines

Love them, yes please, but I'm not feeling lucky punk.

Very funny when I go to North Carolina, and we are sitting in a restaurant and they have a policy that your side arm must be on show on the dining table ( why I don't know?)so there are all my friends with Beretta's, Rugers etc and me with my Swiss Army knife.

I think that it may good to have freedom of choice and to have Pistol Ranges & Clubs, but really apart from that do we really need them for self defence? A sad state of a affairs if we do.

Pro. Ex Pistol shooter and so was wife. One of my surrendered pistols went to the Firearms patent place in Nottingham as it was the only one of a certain type handed in. A Thompson General (1911) in 45 ACP. Should we say that HMG paid a heavy price to take it away.

They are too easy portable and concealed as evidenced by the idiots who now tote them around in our inner cities

I think I was the only person who mentioned self defence but mine was a comment against self defence as a legitimate use reason to have a pistol

Definitely, definitely PRO - the ban was a farce which was more aimed at winning political votes and did NOTHING to reduce gun crime in this country, and simply destroyed a legitimate sport and pastime for thousands of law abiding citizens.

For those who say they would be anti, then just ask yourself how you would feel if a Dunblane type incident had occurred earlier this year but with the use of a shotgun - and this weekend was the last date for you to hand over all your shotguns to the police, to be destroyed, due to the politicians passing a law to make the ownership of shotguns illegal. Not only would you have to part with them in just a few days, but you would only be compensated by £250 maximum per gun . . . . . . . and absolutely NOTHING you could do about it. Doesn't bear thinking about does it? Well I've been there, and had to suffer it while the rest of the shooting community did nothing to help to demonstrate against the new laws as a forceful and united shooting community. A few did but not many.

We are now the ONLY country in EC where citizens are not allowed to legally own a handgun. My wife and I are two of the few people in UK who still shoot Practical Pistol on a regular basis, but it means we have to travel to places like Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, to do it. We have a 9mm Glock 34, a .40cal CZ75TS, and my real pride and joy is a .45 single stack 1911 SIG STX, which are all held by a gun dealer friend in Czech Republic.

There are without doubt ways that this ridiculous law could and should be overturned, in a carefully planned and thought out way but, in my opinion, no politician or political party will have the cohonas to bring it back . . . . . not in my lifetime anyway. I would love to be proved wrong though.

For those who may be interested, the link below is to a section on this forum where details of our handguns were discussed before.

Pistol shooting, and particularly Practical Pistol, is extremely exciting and is without doubt my most favourite of all the shooting disciplines that I have been fortunate enough to partake in. But our next PP shoot will not be until February in Czech Republic so, for now, we look forward to our next Sporting Shoot which is at Barrow Heath on Sunday !

You would always be welcome here on the island, we shoot practical most weeks to a very high standard and most of us are using fairly exotic kit

Hi and yes I am aware that you still shoot on the island, as they still do in Northern Ireland too. I have also recently been over to Jersey for a practical match there. For those reading who may be confused . . . . . yes it is really just mainland UK that suffers from the handgun ban.

The only reason I travel further to shoot is so that I continue to use my own guns. If my gun dealer friend is travelling to a match in Europe then he can take our guns too and we meet up with him at the shooting ground. Having said that, it is amazing that so many people like yourself are willing to lend their guns to other shooters. I have been made similar offers by guys in Ireland. When I was in Jersey recently I was offered a choice of three different guns to use and settled for the Para Ordnance double stack .45

You are so lucky that you can still do it. Of course we never come even close to winning anything because we just can't practice regularly, and sometimes we go to a match having not shot for 6 months, but we have never been disqualified for unsafe gun handling in over 60 international matches (and for those that don't know - the safety rules at Practical Pistol are probably the severest you could encounter - I could outline them if anybody was interested enough) and I'm grateful for your offer.

Shooting overseas is now an expensive business so we have to limit our trips more now than before but, who knows, we may surprise you and pop over to IOM to join you in a match sometime!

I always felt very safe when shooting pistol, just because you had to be safe and you were jumped on if you were not. Even though I have shot clays for years there's always someone who's gun handling is not as safe as it should be.

Mind saying that I have nearly been shot in the foot shooting PP1, buy a revolver user who only fired five shots instead of six and when he let the hammer down his thumb slipped and the gun was pointing at the ground about a foot away from me.

On another occasion an old guy on my right at an indoor range, swept my leg twice when he was pulling the slide back on an auto to see if there was one in the chamber, neither shooters were ever seen again.

Absolutely pro.

As far as I can see absolutely no effect on gun crime since the ban. A ridiculous knee jerk reaction fueled by a media witch hunt against law abiding sportsmen going about there sport. Totally unjustified and historicaly proven to have had no effect whatsoever. sometimes I wonder why anyone acctualy lives in the UK. Nanny state with rubbish weather .......... rant over.

So why stop law abiding people from owning hand guns for use in their sport? The only people who have hand guns now are the scrotes, the scrotes had hand guns before the ban and they still have them, so what use is the ban, what exactly did it achieve????????????...........................NOTHING.
