Went to NWSS today, 12 years old Grandson dusting the high tower with 21 grams 20 bore.

I have shot both 28 gram and 24 gram and I can categorically state that it did NOT alter my Mrs. one bit !

It will not make any difference  when you can see the underside of a clay ! ( soft spot )

Working off pellet count rather than weight can make things simpler. A lot of people using imported cartridges or Black Golds etc will have approx 340 pellets in their 28gm 7.5's due to the Italian sizing. A 24gm cartridge containing English 8 shot will have approx 380 pellets. As long as you have faith in the striking energy on English 8's then jobs a good'un!

I totally agree with you :smile:  when it comes to coverage and density you can play the shot size game to good effect but here the question is whether 24g is as good as 28g and so we have to assume all else as equal. Otherwise we can start saying a 21g load of 9's can trump almost everything in pellet count but we all know the break quality and in fact the distance effectiveness will suffer. 

This argument can broadly be divided into two camps, on the one hand we have rhetoric, assumption and theory without actual field or lab tests to verify results and then there is factual, mechanical and mathematical certainties  . One camp assumes that all clays are always centred and that misses must be due to human error, the other knows that all clays cannot be centred and that scatter guns rely on pellet numbers to break targets or indeed kill game. 

The happy camp almost never back up the rhetoric by switching to lower weight loads  :wink:  and here we have the answer. If recoil is going to raise your score, if the superior patterns   (complete fallacy) are going to help, then why keep punishing your pocket and shoulder and use 28g ?

You know years ago 32grm + was the norm. No discussion, no complaint about recoil an ache here and there. Guns were also hugely inferior to the back bored multi choke adjustable everything we have now. Cartridges are also greatly improved. So I don't really get this type of discussion. DT wants compulsory light loads does he totally want to kill our sport.  I remember the uproar when 32 went done to 28grm.

I shot 350+ 28grm yesterday on an instruction day no aches and pains bit tired that's all.

Well I'm going to use the last of the 28g 9shot Bio wad things in the woods at 4 counties tomorrow. I really struggle to see the clays there, so if I'm playing pin the tail on the donkey, I may as well use the biggest pin I can find.

i quite like it there just the bloody queues on the 2 middle stands facing out into the field i have never waited less than 15 minutes to shoot them and upto double that!

went to a 50 birder there the other week as everything else was cancelled and 15 people waiting to shoot them,unfortunately this seems to put me right of my game specially as the windchill made it feel about -4 :frown:
