I had my two days shooting last Thursday and Friday on the shoot I beat on. The first day was Farmers day and I was very much beating but carrying my gun. Had plenty of chances of birds breaking back, much like glorified rough shooting. Enjoyed it immensely, everybody had some sport and we ended up with happy Farmers (not an easy task in Devon!).

The second day was the more traditional Beaters day. The pickers up stood all day along with shoot helpers who have given more of their time through the year. I'm Saturdays only so I get to walk with the line again but this is no demotion on this shoot. The drives all rely on walking along the valley banks, coming from two sides and the rear to coincide with the flushing points. I generally got to walk on the lower side of the line so that I had a chance at anything going back along with anything going towards the standing guns, but far enough away to not be poaching or interfering with their sport. When we reach the flushing points I was effectively a standing gun but slightly further forward of the main line of guns.

I had a fantastic days sport. I saw red and roe deer, green and lesser spotted woodpeckers, woodcock, jays, goldcrests, mink, rabbits, foxes, seatrout, snowdrops, catkins and other signs of spring. All just because I was there on the day, in a place I would never have access to any other way. I had a bit of a mare in the morning but found I was overleading the birds as you get it in your head that they are faster and further away so need more lead than normal. They don't! Corrected myself for the afternoon drives though.

Now I had just one of those archangel type birds go down the line and subsequently over me on the second day. It must have had a dozen shots fired at it before it got to me, and I thought to myself this is what I've dreamed about all season. A real bird of a lifetime. Did I hit it? Did I heck! Not even ruffled a feather, but I'll still remember that one for the rest of my life.

That's why I go beating.
You must be the only person on this forum who has admitted to missing a bird. Everyone else seems to kill them stone dead at up to 100 yards.you've got my respect.

Oh nooooooooo not that video again...!!

You have done it now Rich....

Ah hahahahaha

I am a country lad as you say, i have been shooting since i could indeed hold the gun. What the hell has this to do with ethics? If you are a true sportsman then you would respect your quarry and use whats required to ensure a humane death not go out and prick dozens of birds just to boost your ego!
. Poor shooting will prick more birds than the load in the shells!!!!!! Although I am inclined to use 32g 5s on pheasant, but that is my choice as am always wanting that high kill!!

Watch this for high pheasants!!
I've shot an odd pheasant or two over the years and been lucky enough to shoot with the best, on the best estates. I have never seen anybody REALISTICALLY kill pheasants beyond 60 yards consistently... Yes, everyone can get lucky with a pellet in the swede every now and again, but in all honesty, I would say that most people cannot really judge range that accurately. Nail a pheasant by its head and wings stretched out onto a pattern plate and walk back 80 yards, I can tell you that it doesn't look very f"@&£!? big!!
Happy shooting!!
We'll said Richard
And any shoot that can put a constant 80ft that allow 100ft as been said on here must have a game strip on Mount Everest .........
We all get the odd couple of birds that just climb but even the very top notch that offer you a bath and lunch after shooting the most realistic of a flush is a 50-60 yard.... !!!

Sorry ashley but you obviously know very little about ballistics. Bigger shot carries more energy farther. Take a rifle bullet of the same calibre but one at say 125g and one at 180g, the 125g bullet will start faster and flatter but at extended range the heavier 180g bullet will require less adjustment for vertical drop than the lighter 125g and carry more energy to it's target ensuring a more effective kill.
I speak as an experienced game shot (35) years and quite a few of those keepering, I suggest you stick to you method and I will stick to mine.

I watched Nigel Teague shooting 70 yarders once with a twenty bore using full and full with 28g 5s , ( absolutely everything he hit was dead in the air )

Are you telling me you have never seen a bird pricked using 36g 4s cos if you are, you haven't done much pheasant shooting.

It's a sad fact that pricking birds is part and parcel of the day, none of us like it but accept it.

( nobody ) is good enough to go pheasant shooting and not have his share of pricked birds no matter if they are 40 yarders or 80 yarders.

If you don't like seeing birds pricked, don't go game shooting

I agree pattern placement is most important. You have to agree though when you go on a large shoot the emphasis is on high birds as it's obviously frowned upon to shoot low birds. With this in mind everyone shoots at the highest birds whether they can hit them or not (and yes this is the case, i have been around long enough and on enough pheasant shoots to see what goes on) light loads are going to produce more wounded birds and that surely can't be argued.
I can see your point k80 but if your up the front end of a good high bird.(that you call high and I call high ) and on its head a 28gram 6....32 gram 5 or even your 36gram 3.5 will kill it....

Lcr fencing is my brother and this year with have killed some birds at bloody good heights....and we both been trying out these 29 gram 6 shot hull superfast..

yep ive missed alot just like the other man and ive pricked some thats why I got three working labs as everybody pricks a bird now and again .

Next door shoot to are farm has 79 days, and yes certain drives there are a great lot of over average birds, and two drives sort the men from the boys...
But out of a 1000 flush you will only get the 10% that excel to a lets say 80yd height, when your on your shoot do let anything under 60yd just fly over you? Or do you shoot the lower birds with your 36g?

Maaaaaaaatt......Break out the insurance quick.

Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawlllll

I've a plan Mr K-80
We can may-be settle this on a clay..... We make it fun and have a great afternoon .... I can set a measured 100yd driven clay with no stalling just as nearest to a pheasant as possible ....... We all bring are desired shot size or choice of cartridge and the most smoked clay as in dust at this range proves there point ..... Then if we are brave enough I could put a teal straight up to see what will be the best smoke kill... It's a free offer and to be fun.... what's your views??

Great chat/debate tonight cheers k80.. night all .
Yeah agreed, it is our duty to respect our quarry at all times, killing everything outright if possible.

We all try to achieve this with our own tried and tested methods and if you can go to bed after a shoot knowing you've done your best to minimise any suffering, happy days
