Where is this special shoot? I've shot all over and lots of big estates, never been asked to make sure I'm using 34g +
I'm guessing they have ice on there wings....? :)

...and the estate owner who shoots 23g 6's at everything, we all keep trying to perswade him 28g of 5's would be better for his higher drives,

"if 23g of 6's doesn't kill them, then they are too high to shoot!!!"

"Then why do you insist on pricking them with 23g 6's???"

If you really believe 28g 6's are ethical on PROPER pheasants you are a joke! I shot a drive last Friday at one of the best shoots in the country and i can assure you the Lowest bird was 70 yards and yes the rest of the drives had some sensible 35-40 yard birds but on that particular drive it would have been cruel to use such loads. Then perhaps some people don't give a sh*t how many are pricked to glide on and die a painful death.
same old thing on these forums you put ya point across and someone calls ya a joke....i tell you what mr k,80 come and stand with me one day ive done more proper pheasant days than most and believe i ent no JOKE......!!!!!!!

Dream on! You would probably be asked to leave this shoot if you turned up using 19g of 6's no matter how much money you have!
yes i have been asked too leave as..the boys with the 36 grams didnt like it. :haha:   :haha:   :haha:   :haha:   :haha:

I shot a fox with my HW 100..... He was 2500 yards away and I took a head shot..... Lucky I guess.....

Sorry that was uncalled for. What i mean is it is 100% wrong to shoot proper high pheasants with such small loads and 99% of the top Pheasant shots would agree. If you are paying i have no problem coming and standing on the next peg to you, lets see who shoots the highest birds. At the end of the day a Pheasant (especially at the end of the season) is a bloody big and very strong bird, you wouldn't go foxing with an air rifle!
i really want too know when you decided that you had too shoot such heavy loads...because if you are such a country person like me and was born with a gun in ya hand and was working on a rearing field as soon as you could walk and shooting a 410 a pheasants as soon as you could hold the gun... and grew up shooting you like me you would be more polite and you would not be arguing with one of ya own....

I am a country lad as you say, i have been shooting since i could indeed hold the gun. What the hell has this to do with ethics? If you are a true sportsman then you would respect your quarry and use whats required to ensure a humane death not go out and prick dozens of birds just to boost your ego!
Who said I prick birds? Who said I dont respect my quarry? Only you mate because you dont know me or how I can shoot ...idont need 36 gram off 4s to kill a pheasant ...you might I dont..and I shoot high sh*t too .
One day ...

I had my two days shooting last Thursday and Friday on the shoot I beat on. The first day was Farmers day and I was very much beating but carrying my gun. Had plenty of chances of birds breaking back, much like glorified rough shooting. Enjoyed it immensely, everybody had some sport and we ended up with happy Farmers (not an easy task in Devon!).

The second day was the more traditional Beaters day. The pickers up stood all day along with shoot helpers who have given more of their time through the year. I'm Saturdays only so I get to walk with the line again but this is no demotion on this shoot. The drives all rely on walking along the valley banks, coming from two sides and the rear to coincide with the flushing points. I generally got to walk on the lower side of the line so that I had a chance at anything going back along with anything going towards the standing guns, but far enough away to not be poaching or interfering with their sport. When we reach the flushing points I was effectively a standing gun but slightly further forward of the main line of guns.

I had a fantastic days sport. I saw red and roe deer, green and lesser spotted woodpeckers, woodcock, jays, goldcrests, mink, rabbits, foxes, seatrout, snowdrops, catkins and other signs of spring. All just because I was there on the day, in a place I would never have access to any other way. I had a bit of a mare in the morning but found I was overleading the birds as you get it in your head that they are faster and further away so need more lead than normal. They don't! Corrected myself for the afternoon drives though.

Now I had just one of those archangel type birds go down the line and subsequently over me on the second day. It must have had a dozen shots fired at it before it got to me, and I thought to myself this is what I've dreamed about all season. A real bird of a lifetime. Did I hit it? Did I heck! Not even ruffled a feather, but I'll still remember that one for the rest of my life.

That's why I go beating.

Well said mark, I, like you have been lucky enough to shoot at high birds around the country over the years

I have never found the need for big loads, I find a good quality 6 and full and full will do the job if you put it in the right place

Shooting 36g 4s make no difference to how dead they are, and I find the smaller pellets penetrate the bird more at height

At 80yds the bigger shot is running out of steam (as are the smaller pellets) so penetration ( if you connect ) is vital

Go on.....One day what? Any top game shot in the country would not say it is ok to use 28g and especially not 19g as you did on pheaseants! I would love to hear from George Digweed or Richard Faulds on this. I have a very good friend who loads over 100 days a year for some very high profile Game shots and not one of them uses anything less than 32g.
like I said this a forum and if you dont like anyone standing there own and having there say thats your prob not mine..also I never once said I prick birds and if you really want a shock now.... my cartridge is pure gold 28 gram 6 shot for pheasant shooting designed by g digweed for gamebore.....and a cracking cartridge too.

I do so many days game shooting , I pick up all season on a huge estate....im not about to go out and prick pheasants or partridges so do insult me by making out I do ..

I've just worked it out...... k-80 shoots his 36g as he likes his pheasant to hit the ground oven ready....... Save's time back in the plucking shed at home....... I would guess a 50g used just to keep the breast ........ :) :) :)

No not for you mike, your post came up while I was typing mine. Had some of those myself hit some and missed plenty but there is no feeling like it when you hold your nerve and pull down an ark angel after everyone in the line has had a go at it, ( double ports all round )

Yes it is always the one you remember. One for the game book.

Watch this for high pheasants!!

I've shot an odd pheasant or two over the years and been lucky enough to shoot with the best, on the best estates. I have never seen anybody REALISTICALLY kill pheasants beyond 60 yards consistently... Yes, everyone can get lucky with a pellet in the swede every now and again, but in all honesty, I would say that most people cannot really judge range that accurately. Nail a pheasant by its head and wings stretched out onto a pattern plate and walk back 80 yards, I can tell you that it doesn't look very f"@&£!? big!!

Happy shooting!!
