I also clean after every use but on a Sunday night I get a bit lazy so clean all other parts and then the hubby does the barrels for me in return for foot massage!

Aha!!!! So that's the sort of thing that goes on behind close doors up country!!!!

I shall move this to the 'adult' section... you do all have access to that right?

Search paradox cleaner on flea bay Robert, my servant swears by it...........

I was at Ian Coleys today and have bought a 2 piece solid aluminium cleaning rod and it should fit the drill chuck as well.  Also got a posh Payne Galway bronze brush!

So hopefully no more ferrules coming off the wooden cleaning rod anymore and I can complete cleaning without anything falling apart!

I am still using the Napier? rod I got with my first gun in 1998!

If you need a drill, change the cartridges..

I've not needed a drill yet but it has been suggested on here that it is easy to do and the new rod will at least fit in a drill if I need it to

I really don't get the drill thing, OK I can understand some of you want to clean the gun including a scrub of the inside of the bores but clearly the build up of plastic or lead etc, does not reduce the bore size so essentially it's a few microns in thickness ?!?

That being the case regardless of how immaculately clean you manage to get it, the minute you chuck a couple of shells in it you're back to square one so you're shooting with a dirty gun. If you're worried about rust then surely a half decent quick spray and pull / push through would suffice ?

is the thread on the brush the same as the rod Robert ? They sometimes differ . The bore brushes don't last long but the chamber brushes are great. Which did you get ?

Or you could just use clean shells like Fiocchi. I never need to clean the barrels.....and I shoot a lot.

Only gets cleaned when it rains......true story...!!
Mental note "must clean gun when it rains"

Thanks for the thought Bryan.  Yes they do.  Its a Bisley 2 part Alu rod. The Payne Galway bronze brush is a much denser type of brush compared to a standard spiral bronze brush but whether its specifically a chamber brush I have no idea!

I know the brush Robert , that's what I use. It will say on the packet , chamber brushes are slightly bigger and are a tight fit where the cartridge goes

Yep. That's the one I got as well.
I have a cheap wooden handled kit from amazon. My end kept falling off during rigorous rodding glued and re crimped and haven't had a problem since.
Also got a jack Pyle kit with metal rods. These are thinner and have a different thread.

You guys using drills.
How do you support the barrels when cleaning with a drill?
Having been in engineering for over 30 years, I've seen more than my fair share of things snatching and spinning large lumps of metal around.

Just hold it in your hand or wrap them in a towel and pop them in a work mate or wrap in a towel and pin it down to a table with your hand. First gear only with the drill though is to be advised.

I use one of these, bolted to a worktop in the garage: http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/shooting/gun-cleaning-gv-30.htm

Depending on what gun you shoot, the main reason for thoroughly cleaning the barrels is to stop pitting, different shells seem to leave different levels of muck in the barrels, for me Hull are the worst, Eley Superbs leave a lot of plastic, I find all I need is one good go with the drill once a month, in between I just use a lambs wool rod which keeps the barrels in reasonable condition.

This could be a mental thing, but I swear when I clean the barrels with the drill and get them nice and shiny the gun shoots smoother, I have in the past honed the barrels, bingle 'honing shotgun barrels' only did it to see if it made any difference, what I think it did do was make it easier to keep the barrels clean.
