Someone (thanks LHS) sent me a replacement recoil pad for my 686E - the new one is gel-tek, but also has a shiny surface, so I can ditch the tatty looking electrical tape on mine.

My understanding was that a Philips screwdriver down the little holes in the existing pad would help me undo the old pad - but no such luck, I can't get the screws to turn.

Note - please bear in mind that I am not mechanically minded (bits and bytes I can do - not bits and bobs ;) ) and most of my tools came from Christmas crackers, but I know a Phlips screwdriver and I have a couple of those - so am I doing something wrong? Is there a trick to this?

Am off to eat a hearty steak dinner in case it's a muscles thing.

Matt,

I'm heading to Taplow for breakfast, I'll pop in on my way back and give you a hand if that works?

If the replacement is a Gel-Tek them most likely will also require the quick release studs and screws, I may be wrong but will bring them just in case.

LMK,

Jon.

put some lube on your screwdriver as you slip it in!!!!

The pointy end goes in the hole and you grip and twist the thick rubber/plastic end

The screws are pozi rather than phillips but they're only wood screws so it shouldn't be a problem. Put a dab of grease or oil on the tip of the screwdriver and wiggle it into the hole before locating in the screw head. Undo each screw a couple of turns at a time because the pad will lift up as the screws loosen. They need quite a lot of turns.

The Gel Tek should have 2 plastic studs with it and it's own fixing screws. They're very simple to install and work well.

I like the Gel Tek, the profile fits my svelte physique and it doesn't snag on clothing like the standard rubber thing.

Jon - bell me, I have errands in the morning - either that or I'll be lazing around watching soccer AM.

You have the correct screws etc to fit pad and yes posi drive and some vaseline

The easiest way to do it is to place the gun muzzle down, on the floor, then you can use your weight by pushing down onto the screwdriver as you turn it. Trying to remove the screws with the stock off the gun is just hard work.

Exactly that - slightly bigger screwdriver, bit of Rutherford gun show.... and its all done...

Thanks LHS and everyone for advice.
