I believe that Wez is fairly new to clay shooting so this needs to be born in mind when replying to his posts. His intentions and ideas are good if a little misguided but then we are all a little guilty of that at times.

I am sure that as his experience grows he will realise the many pitfalls that lie in wait with anything to do with shooting.

Lets keep it friendly please.

Thank you....

My exact reason in fact "Nothing Local where I live".....

Where abouts are you Wez? I do sometimes forget that not everyone is as lucky as we are in Notts (and other counties too) to have a choice of good local grounds :)

My 'local' ground is a 148 mile round trip..  :fie:

Just like WezC, I'd like to build my own practise ground, but alas it will never happen..

I am in Exeter.

The nearest automated skeet to me is at Southern Counties or not automated at Lower Lake in Cornwall. Both 60 miles away, and the Cornwall one only opens once a week when I can get there.

I have seen some promatic traps for sale quite cheap, and my mate Steve the chippy reckons he could make the trap houses quite cheap.

Then need 7 concrete slabs and a genius who can measure it all out correctly.

This may be a goer, but first gonna have to get hold of Council and see what stumbling blocks I have there.

Or build it, use it, and then wait for the complaints, (which might not come) ?

Wez.

Wez, I'm in Exeter as well! I realise they are not automated, but I use Ashcombe and Steve Lings at wellington for most of my skeet practise. I realise that they are not strictly regulation targets, but I find both worthwhile and both within 30 minutes. Besides the amounts of times I have shot SC and the targets haven't been hooped even on a registered shoot, regulated targets in the West Country are wishful thinking! .

Also the local layout I mentioned in an early post is near Taunton, and the guy there would probably press the button for you if on your own.

Or is it?  I don't know...being a moderator and all that...just playing Devil's Advocate.

Well I'm not sure what the law is like now, but I did know a guy many years ago who had his own DTL layout. As far as I remember he did not need planning consent or anything because there were no fixed buildings on the land, the shot fell on his own land and only he and his family used it, so it was non commercial, the nearest house that did not belong to him was almost  two miles away I think, so no noise problems either.

Wez, you've been to Steve Ling's place, it's where Dennis Stepney is.  You won't go far wrong getting some coaching with him, now he's made your gun fit...

We have 2x one acre fields so no were near enough but until a couple of years ago i had a permanent field target air rifle set up in one of them, was great fun but i wish i was in a position to install a dtl - abt layout that would be great but very costly in cartridges as you probably couldnt leave it alone :)

The air rifle thing was dirt cheap could shoot for hours and hours for 5 quid worth of ammo :)

Wez,  Apart from the restriction of 28 occasions per year that you can operate on without planning permission, whether it is private land or rented your biggest problem will almost certainly be complaints about noise.

You say that the nearest house is a mile away, that is plenty close enough if the wind is in the right/wrong direction.People who are even further away and not being disturbed by your noise may well complain anyway simply because they do not like what you are doing.

I know of a shooting ground many years ago who had complaints made about the noise even on a day when there was no shooting taking place !

I club I use has had complaints about the increase in traffic through the village on days when they are not shooting !

If you make a go of it,good luck to you but be prepared for the flak.

Vic.

Very well put Vic. No one wants to put anybody off setting up their own ground but it's an absolute minefield.

Remember when the residents of Longparish complained about the noise from Richard Faulds practising on his parents farm? and this was after he had won an Olympic Gold.

Very different situation to Peter Wison, but I think that it was the fact that Peter won on home soil that made the difference.

Then there's Lower Lodge which was virtually shut down because of noise complaints from a shooting man who lived nearby. The reason he gave was that he wanted to sell his house and thought that the noise would reduce its value.

You can't even rely on support from fellow shooters.

Wasn't there some promatic's stolen recently?
Indeed they were, here's the link on this site.

Could be just a coincidence??? Traps were nicked in Devon and Wez C has been offered them and he is based in Exeter. Wez, be careful, it may be worth speaking to the club in question to clarify models, serial nos etc..... And maybe they will want to take it up with the old bill?

Madmillie makes a good point, that's the theft I posted about! Kicker with that situation is that I since found out that had it not been for the money to replace the traps, they would have started building a skeet layout!

Knew there was a thread recently just didn't have the time to plough through them earlier and find it.

I would be very surprised as these were at a registered shooting ground !

Wez

Don't be surprised .....just check before you buy......because although as you said you are new to the game......it is good to take advice from others who have been around for a long time.....and can shorten your learning curve.

After all this could happen to your little ground at sometime in the future.....and then you would also be posting it on here.

Stealing of traps is on the increase......

Traps are used on shooting grounds....

If everything is checked to do with 'for sale' traps......they the purps might realise that these big cumbersome things with lots of sharp edges......are hard to store and even harder to shift.......just saying..
