those are black powder signal blanks. usually called yacht blanks, but have a multitude of uses, like all blanks.

 i used to make some up, so they were very loud !  also blanks are very dangerous,, they get dismissed by people as they are "only blanks" , at your peril.

but you all knew that anyway, hey ?
