I’ve just noticed that there is a 100 bird ESP registered squadded comp at Coniston shooting ground on the day when I was planning to visit.

As a newbie, I don’t really understand all the competitions yet. Am I correct in thinking they visit various stands around the ground, in squads of 6, with each person having about 5 pairs.

I’m trying to work out if it would seriously impact me if I was to go shooting on my own that day. I just wondered if anyone knows Coniston and has experienced this type of competition there; I obviously don’t mind fitting in around others, but I don’t want to drive there only to find there’s no space, or no stands free etc. Or even worse, dozens of good guns looking over my shoulder as I miss everything!

It might be difficult I'd all the stands are being used for the comp as I don't think the CPSA rules allow for non competitors to shoot during a reg comp.
Give them a call as they might have other stands not being used for the comp that you could use.

If you've never seen a comp. Go and have a look anyway and see how it's done and the standard that people shoot. It will give you good idea of the etiquette etc and confidence to take part in the future.

If you can't shoot at the ground, Go to Kelbrook it's only 30 mins away. If it's a Wednesday and your coming from the lakes direction, there 's also Crabtree at Lupton.

I agree with both of the above. Coniston is nice, but Kelbrook is (IMO) the better of the two and Martin is right to say some of the targets are a consequence of the terrain and not often repeated elsewhere.

When is this? I haven't seen reg ESP advertised anywhere by them. Only DTL.

I'd be delighted if this is the case.

PM.

It was advertised on the CPSA website, rather than on Coniston.

There's nothing listed for them now on the CPSA website.

I wish there was as northern england could desperately do with more grounds.

Oops, I read it wrong. The webpage mentioned events at Coniston, but then listed one at Swinton Estate. I read it (incorrectly) as Coniston.

Apologies for the confusion, my bad.

Most grounds don't adhere to this rule anymore. It's an all welcome free for all.

On most of the Sporting registered shoots I have been to, it was possible to shoot 'birds only'. It is more expensive than the usual practice price, because all of the stands have a Referee and they need paying.
Depending on which day you were going, there is also Crabtree Farm clay shoot o Wednesday and Saturday. They are situated further down the A65, towards the M6 motorway.

I agree, shooting competition birds only is the most likely way you can shoot on a registered day, I do it frequently rather than paying to enter the comp
